💧 What U.S. city is reducing its reliance on imported water by ramping up potable reuse? 🔔 Los Angeles. As climate change intensifies droughts, LA’s reliance on imported water has grown riskier. That’s why the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) partnered with the Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN) to build a 20 mgd Advanced Water Purification Facility at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant in Fairfax County, VA is making history. 🐼 What makes PANDA so revolutionary? It dramatically cuts energy consumption while efficiently treating nitrogen, a critical component in water quality management, using colonies of reddish-colored anammox bacteria. 💧 The plant is still refining the new system with Hazen’s help. 🔮 What will the next-generation of wastewater nutrient removal look like? You don't need a crystal ball. Just checkout these two pilot projects in LA. 🌴 ⚡️ In the world of wastewater, nutrient removal tends to be an energy- and chemical-intensive process. Next-gen approaches can reduce those costs, simplify operations, and increase treatment capacity. 💧 Hazen partnered with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts' (LACSD) on two innovative nutrient removal pilots—one using densified activated sludge (DAS) and another using partial nitrification-dentrification-anammox (PANDA)—to see if they could achieve low nutrient targets while saving money. 📈 The results? As the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) kicks off its 40th(!) annual conference next week in Denver, CO, we're reminded that dam safety is a shared responsibility. Maintaining and fortifying dams is essential for water supply, flood control, irrigation, and hydropower. It takes collaboration and hard work to safeguard these critical—and often visually stunning—structures. One such example is the Savage River Dam in Maryland, where Hazen helped the Upper Potomac River Commission replace its gate system on an emergency schedule. The gates control 6.3 billion gallons of water used by hundreds of thousands of people. 🎉 We are thrilled to share that an article co-authored by seven Hazen experts was selected as a 2024 winner of the prestigious Gascoigne Wastewater Treatment Plant Operational Improvement Medal! The award, which will officially be given at WEFTEC 2024, recognizes exciting advancements in water knowledge and practice. The article delves into how densified activated sludge (DAS) can improve sludge settleability while allowing for increasing capacity ratings of existing infrastructure, enabling utilities to get the most out of limited facility footprints.
