Heat Networks Industry Council
Services for Renewable Energy
Government & Industry collaborating to accelerate Heat Network growth
About us
The Heat Networks Industry Council is a joint industry and Government forum that exists to grow the low carbon heat network sector and help deliver long term transformation of the UK energy system. The Council consists of senior leaders from heat network developers and operators. We represent the key foundations of the heat network sector and already provide heat to tens of thousands of homes and buildings across the UK. Low carbon heat networks are one of the most cost-effective ways of reducing carbon emissions from heating, helping to diversify and de-centralise our energy supply, and enabling us to meet our net-zero targets. We are committed to working with government to significantly grow the heat network sector and build a market that can deliver more reliable, affordable, low carbon heating to households, shops, offices, and public buildings across the UK. The Committee on Climate Change predicts that heat networks will need to provide about 20% of total heat by 2050 to deliver net zero. They currently provide about 2%. While many heat networks currently run on gas, they can also deliver low carbon heat from renewable sources. Delivering this transition and growing the heat network sector offers a substantial economic opportunity. Delivering that target will require £60 – £80 billion of investment and create about 30,000 jobs across the UK. This is a significant investment and job creation opportunity and the largest heat network investment opportunity in Europe. The Council helps to deliver this by: o Promoting the sector and improving awareness of heat networks and their contribution to net zero. o Developing bold and innovative solutions to help grow the market, such as how to capture and utilise more waste heat. o Taking collective action to build the heat network workforce of the future. At a time when we are asking more questions about the future of energy in this country, heat networks are a big part of the answer.

It was great to welcome Miatta Fahnbulleh, Bill Esterson, Tom Ross, Tracey Gilbert and James Naish to the HeatNIC roundtable to discuss heat network policy, the community benefits they can and continue to bring and the journey of customers experience. We really appreciated the time and positive engagement on how heat networks play a key role in meeting the UK’s net zero target; even asking to set the bar higher which we welcome! Recently Minister for Energy Consumers, Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, visited the Mersey Heat Network. 🎉 See the write up from HeatNIC member Vital Energi Utilities Limited below 👇 #heatnetworks #districtheating #energy #netzero #lowcarbon
We believe The Peel Group's Mersey Heat Network is one of the most exciting low-carbon energy projects currently being delivered in the UK and, as it continues to grow along the City’s waterfront, is reshaping how Liverpool generates and uses heat. The project is being developed by Ener-Vate, the UK’s leading District Heat Network Developer; and engineered and constructed by Vital Energi Utilities Limited - the leading engineering and constructor of District Heat Networks. We recently had the pleasure of joining Ener-Vate and The Peel Group as they gave the Minister for Energy Consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh MP a tour of their landmark project, with her commenting, "It was fantastic to visit the Mersey Heat Network today... Heat networks are just one of the ways in which we will invest in clean, homegrown power, helping to finally end our exposure to international markets and secure Britain's energy independence." The Minister's visit included a tour of the state-of-the-art, low-carbon energy centre currently under construction. At the heart of this facility lies one of the UK’s largest water source heat pumps. This cutting-edge technology will harness thermal energy from the historic Leeds and Liverpool Canal, converting it into sustainable heat for surrounding businesses and homes. We can’t wait for the project to go live - bringing Liverpool another step closer to the UK’s net zero targets. We have launched the Heat Network Exchange! It is free to use and post. The Heat Network Exchange was originally launched during the Coronavirus pandemic to connect suppliers with buyers, to meet urgent needs for help. It has now been re-purposed to be a single place to find the main suppliers and opportunities in the market. It has two key areas: 📲 The Supplier Directory is an open directory to bring all heat network services together in one handy place, increase cooperation, and unlock new opportunities across the sector. 📋 The Noticeboard offers businesses the opportunity to post a request for services, equipment, collaboration, or innovation. Businesses who have signed up for alerts will automatically receive these requests to their inbox. This week, The Association for Decentralised Energy has launched its two new missions - (1) Empowering Energy Demand and (2) Decarbonising British Heat. Over the next year, HeatNIC will be contributing to these missions. We will be looking at what actions the industry can take to make low carbon heat more cost-effective for consumers, as well as working with government to look at what policy change can achieve. Read more about the missions here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gZpvVtFm #heatnetworks #districtheating #netzero #lowcarbon #dhc #GBEnergy #energy
The ADE is delighted to announce that today, we launch our two new missions! ▶ Empowering Energy Demand ▶ Decarbonising British Heat We have launched these Missions because action must be taken now if the UK has any chance of reaching its net zero targets without breaking the bank. The two missions encapsulate solutions that can provide clean, cheap energy for the UK - we just need the transformational leadership from the Government to get us there. The Government has used its first few months in power to demonstrate their determination to deliver net zero, however, more is needed. What do we want these missions to achieve? Empowering Energy Demand involves embracing the value of a decarbonised, demand-led energy system, creating a future where households, businesses and industry are properly rewarded. Decarbonising British Heat involves transforming how UK homes and businesses are heated, for a future where heat is secure, clean and drives economic growth. The ADE and its members are already working hard to achieve this. Will you join us? Our Chief Executive Officer, Caroline Bragg, has a few words to share with you on these missions and what we're doing about them. Have a watch below ⬇ You can read more about our Missions here - https://lnkd.in/gZpvVtFm and get in touch at external.affairs@theade.co.uk with any enquiries.

You probably know that the Climate Change Committee has estimated that around 20% of the UK's heat demand needs to be met by heat networks. But did you know that EU funded research by Aalborg University put the estimate closer to 35%? Either way, for towns and cities across the UK, heat networks will be a major feature for heat decarbonisation. #heatnetworks #districtheating #energyefficiency #DHC #netzero #cleanheat

Adding large-scale thermal energy storage (TES), such as those attached to district heat networks, allowed energy systems in northern Europe "to have a 35% higher PV capacity, 10% higher wind capacity, and lower levels of curtailment." "Additionally, systems with TES had 2.4 €/MWh lower average heat price (with 24% lower peak price)." This is because heat networks with TES are able to take electricity from the grid at times of low demand, and store it for use later in the day, week or even month. Heating is one of the biggest causes of electricity system peaks. With heat networks, we can shift and flatten this demand significantly. Heat networks are a cornerstone of energy system cost-reduction.
