Through historic preservation, modern design, an emphasis on sustainability and the incorporation of a modern Indigenous restaurant, Water Works intertwines the past and present of Minneapolis. This complex project—a public/private partnership between the Minneapolis Parks Foundation, Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, and The Sioux Chef— is part of a plan to enhance the iconic St. Anthony Falls area. The three-acre site within Mill Ruins Park is home to Owamni by The Sioux Chef, a full-service restaurant revitalizing Native American cuisine with a focus on purchasing ingredients from Indigenous producers. HGA’s design eloquently recalls the site’s long history of masonry architecture while evoking a decidedly contemporary feel. The first level’s arched glass entryway features original mill walls. A stone patio by landscape architects Damon Farber Landscape Architects is lined with railroad ties that echoes the original river and rail transportation. A large-scale water reclamation system harvests rainwater from the rooftops of buildings to use in park irrigation. Today’s colleges and universities need every competitive advantage they can get as the demand for student housing has remained strong, but supply is struggling to keep up. The answers to these questions vary by institution. To help administrators sort out the best solutions, HGA recently embarked on a study of residence hall design. Explore the actionable results from the study, here ⬇

Writing for Architectural Record, Contributing Editor Clifford Pearson takes us on a journey behind the design of Jacobs Music Center, the San Diego Symphony’s new home. “By combining the hall’s Hollywood DNA with modern technology and contemporary aesthetics, the project’s architects have given new life to a cultural doyenne that can still lay on the charm.” See the plans and more, here: https://lnkd.in/6f3s1 🤝: Schuler Shook, Rudolph and Sletten, Akustiks, LLC 📸: Architectural Record // Richard Barnes

Representing HGA’s design team, Meredith Hayes Gordon, Lauren Piepho and Jacob Turgeon helped lead a building tour of the Institute for Integrative & Innovative Research (I3R) at the University of Arkansas, facilitated by WoodWorks. Designed as a collaboration hub for innovation and discovery, the flexible 144,000 SF state-of-the-art facility fosters interdisciplinary research, economic development and translational efforts to solve the grand challenges of today — protecting human health; understanding the food, energy, water nexus; and exploring the universe at all scales. At the center of the building is the striking architecturally exposed mass timber pavilion, constructed of southern yellow pine glulam and CLT. It’s officially fall! 🍂 We’re dreaming of the perfect autumn getaway — the cozy cottages at Marlboro Music. Inspired by the cottages of Cape Cod, these simple structures were designed to house senior musicians during a seven-week summer festival where young musicians collaborate alongside master artists in an environment removed from the pressures of performance. The cottages preserve the bucolic nature of the surrounding area while being responsive to the needs of the musicians and 21st century life. Their small footprints, sloped roofs and indigenous materials reinforce their place amidst the lush Vermont landscape of rolling hills and streams. New native plant species require little maintenance; over time, the forest will continue to grow up around the cottages, blending the forms seamlessly into the natural landscape. 📍 Marlboro Music School and Festival Five Cottages | Marlboro, VT 📸 Paul Crosby

In September, projects across the firm shared a unifying theme—bringing people together and fostering stronger, more connected communities. In California, we celebrated the highly anticipated grand opening of the San Diego Symphony's Jacobs Music Center and a ribbon cutting ceremony for the UC Davis Health's Panda Care Center of Hope in Sacramento. Meanwhile, in Wisconsin, we broke ground on a transformative addition to the Versiti Blood Research Institute, advancing vital medical research, and in South Carolina, the revitalized College of Charleston's Simons Center for the Arts reopened, making the arts more visible and accessible. Additionally, exciting projects are underway, including a new continuing care retirement community and a comprehensive addiction treatment facility, set to offer life-changing support for women and their families. The M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital is full of special places where kids and families find hope, healing and happiness. HGA had the honor of designing a few of these spaces, including Kyle Rudolph’s End Zone, the Zucker Family Suite and Broadcast Studio and the Wilf Family Center. The latest issue of the University of Minnesota's Discovery magazine highlights the hospital's unique spaces and explores how they were thoughtfully designed with children’s well-being in mind.
