Do you know how Highlands Ranch started? Do you know what makes it unique among other communities in Colorado? Whether you've lived in Highlands Ranch for 20 years or two months, the Metro District's Citizens Academy will help you understand the inner workings of where you live and why it matters. We are accepting applications for the 2025 Citizens Academy through Nov. 15. This citizen engagement program will be held Thursdays from 5:30 to 9 p.m. throughout January and February at locations around Highlands Ranch. This eight-session course exposes participants to key topics and issues in Highlands Ranch and introduces opportunities for civic involvement. Here's what one 2024 Citizens Academy graduate had to say about the program: "I feel so much more confident in speaking up in the community knowing better how things work and how they connect together. At an Aug. 27 public hearing, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners formally approved a request to change the name of the entirety of Lucent Boulevard, from County Line Road to South Broadway, to Kendrick Castillo Way. As part of the ongoing mission to memorialize Kendrick – who was killed May 7, 2019, during his senior year of high school, having sacrificed his own life to save fellow students amid a school shooting – the Kendrick Castillo Memorial Oversight Committee requested the road name change.
