We’re always grateful for the opportunity to connect with and learn from urbanists across the globe.     This week, we were honored to host 26 experts from The University of Tokyo’s Smart City School at our New York office. This delegation, consisting of real estate practitioners, urban tech and media innovators, and mobility experts, joined us for a dynamic discussion about planning, equitable economic development, and urban tech in NYC.       A big thank you to everyone who made this event a success and to our guests for the engaging dialogue – we look forward to continuing this collaboration!      #SmartCities #UrbanInnovation #GlobalCollaboration #UrbanTech #UniversityofTokyo

It’s so valuable to learn about a city by being immersed in it and connecting directly with the champions working to tell its authentic history, drive equitable change, and improve the relationship between residents and government. It’s also incredibly rewarding to spend time with values-aligned people doing cool work in their own cities. The Next City Vanguard summit in Lexington, KY was all of that and more. Some highlights: • Visiting Berea College, the first integrated, co-ed college in the South offering tuition-free education since 1892, and viewing bell hooks’ personal journals at the bell hooks Archive (on her birthday!) • Having the nerdiest conversation about comprehensive plans in different cities over happy hour after learning about Lexington’s Urban Service Boundary, which separates urban and rural while ensuring that one supports the other. • Learning about Lexington’s LGBTQ history and about Sweet Evening Breeze, a Black queer figure from the Jim Crow era who helped overturn the city’s cross-dressing ordinance. • Enjoying delicious sandwiches at DV8 Kitchen, listed among Yelp’s Top 100 Brunch Spots in the US (2021), known for offering second chance employment for people recovering from addiction. • Presenting our work at HR&A Advisors to support newly elected leaders transition into office and enact bold, progressive change – followed by many conversations with fellow Vanguards about what this could look like in their cities. I left full of hope, gratitude, and a renewed sense of mission. A heartfelt thank-you to the Next City team for organizing one of the most thoughtfully curated fellowships I’ve ever attended. And to my fellow Vanguards – looking forward to crossing paths again very soon. #VanguardLexington #NextCity

The climate crisis has been on full display over the last week — with harrowing images of devastated communities in the Southeast in the wake of Hurricane Helene. We're grateful that our HR&A Advisors Raleigh team is safe, but our hearts go out to the families, first responders, and survivors who are still grappling with the aftermath. We know these disasters will continue to increase as the climate warms, and it’s our responsibility to build more resilient systems that can better withstand what’s ahead. At the height of the pandemic, our CEO Jeff Hébert and Partner Phillip Kash shared this framework for a just and resilient recovery, informed by our work at HR&A as well as Jeff's experience as New Orleans’ Chief Resilience Officer. It feels just as relevant today as it did four years ago. Public and private institutions, including government, businesses, nonprofits, philanthropies, and community leaders, should organize their efforts around four phases: 1) emergency response, 2) stabilization, 3) adaptation, and 4) institutionalization. Congratulations to Principal Greta Byrum for completing her Benton Institute for Broadband & Society Opportunity Fund Fellowship with a timely report on the risks of digital inclusion and practical measures to increase digital safety. With unprecedented investments from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), it's vital to ensure that new and vulnerable users are protected from digital risks, especially in the age of AI.    The report offers actionable recommendations for state and territory broadband offices to mitigate potential harms and implement safety measures, from risk assessments and data policies to inclusive workforce programs and community-based digital safety solutions. The report aims to ensure that the laudable goals of "Internet for All" are not undercut by expanding access at the expense of safety.    #DigitalEquity #BroadbandForAll #Cybersecurity #DigitalSafety    Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g9Ewbnfd

We are excited to support a new vision for Manresa Island in Connecticut to transform this abandoned industrial site into a 125-acre publicly accessible park and community hub for all.    With plans for landscape and shoreline restoration, coastal access and water recreation, community spaces, and adventure play, this project promises to transform the site, which was once known as one of Connecticut’s “sooty 6” power plants. HR&A is excited to support Allison and Austin McChord, Manresa Island Corp Executive Director Jessica Vonashek, and SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC in securing partners and advancing implementation efforts to bring this vision to life.     Read more in this piece from the The New York Times: https://lnkd.in/grzDaPCE    #ManresaIsland #adaptivereuse #UrbanRevitalization #NYT #publicspace #communityspace #culturalspace  BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group AKRF eDesign Dynamics Directional Logic Halvorson | Tighe & Bond Studio Photo: SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC

Director Giacomo Bagarella shares his takeaways after attending the 43rd edition of the Manfred Wörner Seminar, a program hosted by the German government that convenes young professionals from the U.S. and Europe to discuss Transatlantic relations and international affairs and security. Giacomo spent 10 days workshopping solutions to some of today’s biggest global challenges with peers and other experts in Bonn, Brussels, and Berlin.   Giacomo’s work in HR&A’s Urban Tech and Innovation and Economic Development practices seeks to bridge the local and the global to deliver on HR&A’s mission to build equitable and resilient communities and improve people’s lives. We look forward to Giacomo integrating lessons-learned from the seminar into our work both internationally and within the U.S.   #ManfredWoernerSeminar #Technology #Innovation #InternationalAffairs #Resiliency

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of participating in the Manfred Wörner Seminar, a program that convenes young professionals from the U.S. and Europe to discuss #Transatlantic relations 🌍 and security in Bonn, Brussels, and Berlin. I could write so much on what I learned from fellow participants and speakers from organizations like #NATO, the #EuropeanUnion and other multilateral organizations, the German Parliament and Armed Forces, think tanks, and more. Instead, I’ll focus on a standout theme for me: #risk. It is clear that Western countries, and Europe in particular, have thoroughly neglected investments that prevent or mitigate risk. This issue affects defense 🛡 and deterrence (including cyber), supply chain 🏭 and energy ⚡ security, civilian protection 🏙 and climate resiliency ☁, and more. We saw what it meant to be unprepared with COVID-19 in 2020; we saw it again following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Managing risk is expensive and its benefits are either invisible or spread over the long term, with poor alignment with political cycles. Voters and decision-makers have become averse to investments—especially in defense—following years of retrenchment, austerity, and a false sense of insulation and security. It is time to once again build a proactive and visionary consensus. The Biden Administration’s industrial and climate legislation and Mario Draghi’s report on European competitiveness point the way to ambitious plans to make our societies wealthier, healthier, safer, and more resilient. Every day we wait, the costs increase. I am energized to work with my Transatlantic and pan-European peers to achieve this not in national isolation, but together. Thank you to Jana Teetz, Michael Wawrzyniak, and the Bundeswehr Wir. Dienen. Deutschland. for hosting us, to HR&A Advisors for sponsoring my attendance, and to all of the other participants for their insights, questions, and conversations—it was an inspiring 11 days with rich professional and social connections. #ManfredWoernerSeminar

Last Thursday, Vanderbilt University announced an exciting step toward expanding its presence in New York City with the lease of a historic campus in the heart of Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. This decision builds on the university’s long-standing history with New York City and signals an important step towards achieving its global vision. As Vanderbilt strengthens its ties to the NYC metro area, we are eager to see how this enhanced presence will contribute to both the university’s academic goals and the city’s continued role as a hub for talent and innovation. Congratulations to Vanderbilt University on this exciting new venture! We look forward to seeing the impact of this new campus in Chelsea and the benefits it will bring to the broader community. #VanderbiltUniversity #GlobalVision #HigherEducation #InnovationHub

It is with great sadness that we share the news that HR&A Partner Kate Coburn passed away last week.   During her 14-year tenure at HR&A, Kate helped elevate our brand as one of the most trusted advisors in the industry, provided strategic guidance to countless clients about how to better serve their communities, and shaped a supportive company culture by bringing a sense of care to every interaction with her colleagues. With her deep commitment to mentorship and teaching, Kate’s legacy lives on in the many lives and careers she helped shape and support across HR&A and our extended community.   “HR&A wouldn’t be the place it is today without Kate’s contributions,” said CEO Jeff Hébert, “Kate created new pathways for women in the real estate industry, and she brought others along with her by mentoring the next generation and inspiring excellence in all she did. She was known for the passion she brought to her work as she helped shape consequential projects from New York City to Birmingham. Her characteristic spirit and zeal will be sorely missed by her colleagues and clients.”   Kate was a fearless trailblazer in our industry for over 30 years. Prior to HR&A, she was a leader at AECOM, Economics Research Associates, Cushman & Wakefield, and Rockefeller Center. Her legacy revitalizing downtowns and creating vibrant places is on display across cities in Alabama, California, Louisiana, New York, Texas and beyond. She also inspired and guided generations of real estate leaders across organizations such as CREW Network, WX Inc., Public-Private Real Estate Professionals (P/PREP), and the Young Men’s/Women’s Real Estate Association.   To honor Kate’s legacy and her commitment to mentorship, HR&A is creating the “Kate Coburn Internship for Emerging Women in Real Estate” to help emerging professionals launch their real estate careers. Since the news of her passing, we have heard countless stories about Kate’s impact on the careers of so many across the HR&A extended network, and we can think of no better way to keep her spirit alive and continue her work supporting the next generation of real estate leaders and changemakers.   Kate leaves behind a loving family and expansive network of friends, collaborators, and colleagues. In celebration of NYC Climate Week, we’re spotlighting impactful climate projects with visionary clients.      HR&A is proud to have supported The World Bank City Resilience Program and the National Treasury of South Africa in advancing nine resilient infrastructure and renewable energy projects across seven metropolitan governments. Our work with Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, and Tshwane — home to over 10 million people — focuses on stormwater management and climate resilience in the Kaalspruit River catchment, addressing poor water quality and flooding through collaborative governance.     We also helped Cape Town explore land value capture to fund flood mitigation infrastructure and supporting Mangaung in developing a mixed-use project that enhances resilience in flood-prone areas. Our workshops with over 50 government officials have shared vital knowledge on funding and delivering climate infrastructure.     Learn more about our work with World Bank and local South African municipalities by clicking the link below.     #ClimateResilience #SustainableCities #SouthAfrica
