Mary is digging in! We were there when Mary The TBM started boring a twin tunnel at the #HRBTExpansion Project on Oct. 17, 2024. She has already placed the first 20 concrete rings of the next tunnel. Approx. 1,174 rings to go! Now it's time to get her 4th gantry attached to the TBM to keep her forward momentum going! While Mary digs in, crews are working on the tunnel approach structures, forming walls that will divide traffic exiting the tubes and creating roadway inside the recently bored tunnel. Outside the HRBT, more crews are building new trestles, demolishing the old and widening or rebuilding up to 25 bridges. It's a BIG lift and our crews know it's an IMPORTANT one for Hampton Roads motorists. #VDOT #VDOTHR #HRCP #HRTAC #VINCI #FLATIRON #DRAGADOS #Tunneling #Engineering #Construction

After powering her way through the harbor, Mary The Tunnel Boring Machine's cutterhead has taken center stage, fully emerged from the newly bored tunnel and into the receiving pit at North Island. This heavy lift was a job too big for a crane. Instead, our innovative engineering teams and dedicated crews used nitrogen tables to raise, slide, and turn the massive tool 180 degrees into launch position. Now facing Norfolk in anticipation of boring the expansion's second tunnel, Mary's shield waits to be reunited with her trailing gantries which remain, for now, in the tube.

[Hampton Roads-Bridge Tunnel Expansion - USA] – Geotechnical and structural monitoring during major infrastructure works 📍🗺 Sixense is very proud to be a part of such an iconic project – the largest highway construction project in Virginia’s history. It will widen the current four-lane road along nearly 16 kms of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton, introducing twin tunnels across the harbor. The expansion aims to increase capacity, alleviate major congestion, and enhance travel time reliability for all commuters. 🚧🛣🚘 🔎 Our Sixense Northern America teams have put in place an exceptional monitoring system, employing over 5,000 geotechnical and structural instruments including automated total stations, vibration monitors, tiltmeters, and other subsurface instruments. Amidst the challenges of this project, our primary focus has been conducting operations seamlessly without causing disruptions to the traffic flow, while ensuring the safety of both the traveling public and job operators. Thanks to our specialised devices, tailored to each ongoing construction activity, we have managed to achieve the required high spatial density and high-frequency monitoring, minimising interruptions to existing highway traffic, and eliminating the need for manual readings in high-traffic areas. 📈💻✅ 🤝 By closely collaborating with the design and construction teams at Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), we are thrilled to continue to work on a project that is making history and stands as one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the country. #HRBT #Engineering #MonitoringSolutions #Geotechnical
