  • Known publicly as Gerda Taro, Gerta Pohorylle died today, July 26, in 1937 at the young age of 26. She is recognized as the one of the first woman war photographers to die on the front lines.   Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Taro left home for Paris in 1933 when Hitler became chancellor. As an anti-Nazi activist who had recently been arrested, her family encouraged her to leave Germany as the situation became increasingly dangerous. The next year Taro met Robert Capa, who had also fled to Paris. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936, together they photographed the Loyalist troops, initially both making images under the name Robert Capa. Taro eventually broke out on her own, procuring images under her own name until her untimely death, which resulted from the Battle of Brunete.   Today, we are left with Gerda Taro’s powerful images created within four short years. Her photographs include many depictions of children; refugees; soldiers in-action; and soldiers eating, drinking, and at rest. You can view the second image in Selections from ICP at 50, on view at ICP today. • "The John V. Lindsay East River Park runs across a stretch of urbanized coastline on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a place where issues of climate change, class, and community governance become visible." Gabriel Civita Ramirez created his project, Ceded Concrete, while in the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at ICP. The project "documents the park's transformation, exploring the tension between mourning and acceptance as the landscape undergoes a dramatic change. " See this and more student work on view now in Shared Spaces: https://lnkd.in/evKM3ESx Text by Gabriel Civita Ramirez

  • Today we honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, who fought against the racist apartheid system in his homeland, and for equality and freedom for all people. This image is by Jürgen Schadeberg, a photographer who documented many critical moments of South African history. Schadeberg's 1954 image of the Drum Magazine Office—a publication reflecting on Black life that was staffed by both Black and white photographers and writers—is currently on view in Selections from ICP at 50. Image: Jürgen Schadeberg, Nelson Mandela, Treason Trial, 1958 (Printed 2001), Purchase, with funds provided by the ICP Acquisitions Committee, 2012 (2012.84.1)

Berenice Abbott was born today in 1898. Born in Springfield, Ohio, Abbott spent the early part of her artistic career studying sculpture in New York, Berlin, and Paris, where she worked as Man Ray's studio assistant. In 1929, Abbott she developed her best-known body of work — a documentation of New York City for which she developed her famous bird's-eye and worm's-eye points-of-view. One of Abbott's later final projects was an illustration of scientific phenomenon, produced in the 1950s in collaboration with the Physical Sciences Study Committee based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Although not as well known as her New York work, these pictures are exquisite examples of her acumen for technical experimentation and her natural instinct for combining factual photographic detail with stunning artistic accomplishment. Images 1: Butcher Shop, New York, New York, Gift of Jonathan A.
