🌍 For International Rural Womens' Day (Oct. 15), Stand4HerLandTanzania along with coalition members Landesa Tanzania, We Effect East Africa, TAWLA TANZANIA WOMEN LAWYERS ASSOCIATION, and Tanzania Land Alliance hosted an empowering Rural Women Forum in Nkulabi Village, Dodoma region. ♀ Over 250 grassroots women came together to discuss their challenges around land rights and develop an action plan on how to address those challenges. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ Customary norms still limit women's ability to own land. 2️⃣ Patriarchy often restricts land ownership to men, rooted in family lineage. 3️⃣ Lack of education on women’s land rights continues to deny many women their rights. Education is key! 4️⃣ Women’s participation in land decision-making remains low—encouraging them to step up, especially in the upcoming local elections. 5️⃣ Women’s role in agriculture and food security must be recognized to ensure they benefit from their hard work. 💬 The discussions were led by grassroots women with the objective of enhancing their voice, agency, and leadership on matters relating to their land rights. 🙌 Let’s keep the momentum going! #Stand4HerLand #WomensLandRights #RuralVoices #LandRights

Reducing global poverty and growing opportunity through the power of land rights.
About us
Landesa partners with governments and local organizations to ensure that rural women and men living in extreme poverty have secure rights over the land they depend on. Founded as the Rural Development Institute in 1981, Landesa has helped more than 720 million people strengthen legal control over their land in the last five years. When people have secure land rights, they can invest in their land to sustainably increase their harvests and reap the benefits—improved nutrition, health, education, resilience, and opportunity—for generations.

🍃 Around the world, women—especially those without secure land rights—are disproportionately impacted by climate change, facing greater risks of food insecurity, displacement, and loss of livelihood. ♀️ But women also hold unique roles and knowledge of natural resources, making them powerful agents of change. Increasing women’s control over land increases their decision-making power in their households and communities and boosts their influence as champions for climate resilience. 💪This International Day of Rural Women, we’re spotlighting our programs that address both climate change and women’s land rights, empowering women to lead the fight for climate resilience in their communities. #LandRights #RuralWomen #WomensLandRights #ClimateAction #ClimateChange

🚨New Blog Alert - "National Advocacy, Local Resilience: Women’s Land Rights and Climate Change in South Asia" 🚨 In South Asia, women face disproportionate harm from climate change and land inequities. Strong land rights give women the power to shape natural resource governance, participate in political processes, and help their communities adapt to climate challenges. 💪 Through Landesa’s Women-Led Collective Advocacy for Climate Action project in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Maldives, we’re working with national coalitions to strengthen women’s land rights and build local climate resilience. In our new three-part blog series, Corey Creedon, Landesa's sustainable land use and livelihoods specialist and project technical lead, speaks with national coalition leads about their efforts to empower women and drive climate action at the community level. Hear from: 🙂“Rowshan Moni”, Deputy Executive Director of Association for Land Reform and Development 🙂Prem Prakash Nepali, Program Manager of National Land Rights Forum 🙂Muna Mohamed, Executive Director of Land Sea Maldives 🌟 Read the series and learn how these leaders are scaling gender-equitable land rights and climate advocacy: https://lnkd.in/dzBcGBxX #LandRights #ClimateAction #WomensLandRights #ClimateChange

🏞️ Landesa Indonesia is working with the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency to help local communities secure rights to their land, especially those living in coastal areas and depending on mangroves for their livelihoods. 🌱At a recent regional meeting, we shared our efforts to speed up the process of registering these communities' land so they can have more control and protection over their land. 💪 By doing this, we are also linking our work to larger goals like sustainability, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation. 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to Landesa Indonesia Director Mardha Tillah, Indonesia's Minister of Agrarian Affairs Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, all the government officials, the dedicated Landesa Indonesia team, and the representatives of Indigenous communities for coming together and making this meeting a success! #LandRights

🌱Land rights are the foundation of our work, but what exactly do we mean when we say, "land rights"? By definition, land rights mean a legal and social guarantee to access, manage, use, own, transfer, and inherit land. 🙌To us, land rights mean so much more beyond the definition. When land rights are gender-equitable and socially-inclusive, they create a wave of impact including: 💚 dignity and status 💚 women's empowerment 💚 equality 💚 financial security 💚 shelter and safety 💚 climate resilience 💚 peaceful communities 💚 health and nutrition These benefits start with people who have the least access to power and ripple outward to communities, to countries, and across the globe. 💪 The path to prosperity and freedom begins with land, and we'll continue to empower millions of women and men with this powerful tool for a more sustainable and equitable future for all. #LandRights

🦛 Like many of you, we're big fans of Moo Deng, the pygmy hippo taking the internet by storm. 🍃 Pygmy hippos originate from West Africa, where they are endangered because of deforestation and habitat loss. 🌱 Secure land rights for communities, including in Liberia where Landesa works, can promote sustainable land and forest management – essential for protecting people's livelihoods and the lives of creatures like Moo Deng. #LandRights #MooDeng

📝Last week, Landesa Kenya hosted a paralegal training program, in partnership with One Acre Fund and with the support of Co-Impact! This initiative is a key step in advancing secure land rights for women, men, and youth across Kenya. Unclear land titles, disputes, and inequitable land distribution are major obstacles to justice and development for vulnerable communities. This program equips paralegals with the skills to help resolve land disputes, secure ownership, and empower communities to assert their land rights. Through this initiative, the program aims to: 👉 Promote justice & equity in land governance 👉 Empower smallholder farmers in counties like Kakamega, Kisumu, and Kisii 👉 Strengthen collaboration between state & non-state actors 👉 Drive systemic change for land rights security 💚 Huge thanks to the Paralegal Society of Kenya, Legal Resources Foundation, and all the participants and staff involved in putting this together. We’re excited to see the long-term impact of secure land rights in transforming lives! #LandRights

We need to close the gap on women's land rights - but why? Closing the gap on women's land rights is essential for securing their futures, empowering their communities, and driving economic growth. When women have equal access to land, they gain stability and security, increasing their ability to provide for themselves and their families. Land rights also empower women economically and socially. Women make up around half of agricultural workers in developing countries and produce 60 - 80% per cent of food grown in these regions yet own less than one-fifth of all land worldwide. By removing barriers to land ownership for women, they are able to make decisions on how to manage land, and both soil health and agricultural yields improve. As said by UN Convention to Combat Desertification Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw: “Investing in women’s equal access to land is not just an act of justice. It is an investment in our future, a commitment to the prosperity of our planet. It is an affirmation that we value not only the land beneath our feet, but the hands that work it.” By ensuring land rights for women, we create a pathway to gender equality and sustainable progress for our urban environments and communities.
