This week, Maryhaven President Oyauma Garrison, MBA, CPCU, spoke at a Steering Committee Meeting at the Columbus City Council on Mental Health in BIPOC communities. In an effort to break stigmas and create community, Oyauma brought awareness to the important topic, recognizing that 1 in 5 Franklin County adults experience a diagnosable mental health illness. The BIPOC community in particular is impacted by mental illness, with suicide as the 2nd leading cause of death for Black/African Americans age 15-46. The good news - conversations like this and support by so many groups, like Maryhaven, in Columbus means there is a reason for hope and healing. Being able to talk about mental health issues and experiences is the number one sign of resiliency according to the STAR Resiliency Pyramid, and by having more conversations we shatter stigmas about receiving mental health treatments. Together, we are stronger.

This past Friday a team from Maryhaven attended our community partner, Alvis', Evening of Light Annual Fundraiser, as proud sponsors. The evening spotlights the successes of children and families of Alvis and honors families who have helped strengthen our community. Funded by the generous donors of Evening of Light, the Alvis Family and Children's Program offers parents and children resources and support as they work together to strengthen their relationships and rebuild productive, healthy, self-sufficient lives. We are proud to be able to support this amazing partner, and recognize that together we are stronger as we work to help people restore their lives.
