On 28 May, as part of the Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum in Breda, the POLIS Network and the MONA project organised a workshop on 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Experts and stakeholders gathered to explore strategies to promote tourism that respects nature, supports local economies and enhances the visitor experience. Here's a summary of the discussions: 🚶♂️ Modal shift: Jan Weverbergh of Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide highlighted the need to improve facilities to facilitate a modal shift towards sustainable transport options. 🗺️ Routing: Fabio Tat from VisitBrabant Routebureau provided insights into optimising visitor distribution and accessibility through robust routing networks. 👉 Nudging: Caroline Schuhmacher from Tourismus Zentrale Saarland GmbH explored methods to encourage sustainable mobility behaviour in nature areas. SMARTA-NET, a project to promote sustainable mobility links between rural and urban areas to support ecotourism, was presented by André Freitas of TIS - Consultores em Transportes, Inovação e Sistemas. Lastly, Martijn Mur presented the Veluwezoom project, illustrating how restoring the balance between recreation and the environment involves strategic measures such as closing main roads and relocating car parks. The discussion underlined the importance of accessibility when planning tourism development. As visitor numbers increase environmental impacts and inconveniences for locals and visitors increase. Improved accessibility can change visitor behaviour and should be consistent with conservation and tourism development objectives.
