There is no country that currently invests more in nature than it spends on destroying it. Changing that calculus and promoting nature-positive incentives can go a long way to closing the #biodiversity financing gap and is a key part of achieving international environmental goals. The Global Environment Facility will hold a full-day conference on October 27, in the Green Zone of UN Biodiversity's COP16 Colombia, on the potential of positive incentives, reforms of harmful subsidies, and policy alignment to achieve Target 18 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF). The event is co-hosted with the Government of Colombia, UN Biodiversity's Secretariat, Conservation International, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, The ICCF Group, The Nature Conservancy, The World Bank, and World Economic Forum. 🔗 Join us in Cali and online: https://lnkd.in/eSsgyp7V #COP16Colombia | #GEFatCOP16Colombia

Building on the ambitious goals Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF), Target 18 aims to identify and reform subsidies that harm #biodiversity, while scaling up positive incentives for investing in nature. At #COP16Colombia, Moore Foundation Trustee Rosina Bierbaum and Chief of Programs Aileen Lee will join a full-day conference with the Global Environment Facility to shine a light on actionable solutions to change the investment landscape in favor of nature-positive, sustainable activity, including in the fisheries and agriculture sectors. We are pleased to cosponsor the event with UN Biodiversity, Conservation International, The ICCF Group, The Nature Conservancy, The World Bank, and World Economic Forum. This event will delve into: 🔍 Positive Incentives: How can we promote practices that support biodiversity? 🚫 Reforming Harmful Subsidies: What strategies can eliminate incentives detrimental to our ecosystems? 💼 The Role of the Private Sector: Insights into biodiversity finance and stakeholder collaboration. 📆Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 27 and join us online: Target 18: Creating the Right Incentives for a Nature-Positive Future ➡️ Link: https://lnkd.in/eSsgyp7V #GEFatCOP16Colombia #environmentalconservation #philanthropy

👏 Experimental Physics Investigator Kyle Leach was recognized with the American Physical Society 2025 Francis M. Pipkin Award. Congrats, Kyle! ⚡ The award recognizes early-career scientists in the interdisciplinary areas of precision measurement and fundamental constants. Leach has won the award, “for initiating and establishing new measurement techniques using rare-isotope-doped superconducting sensors as sensitive probes of fundamental physics in the electroweak sector.” Our Experimental Physics Investigators Initiative (EPI) provides flexible funding to pursue imaginative research ideas, allowing the investigators to explore new and uncharted areas and advance the scientific understanding of the natural world. Learn more about these efforts at www.mooore.org/epi Our EPI team: Theodore Hodapp, Catherine Mader, Tess L. #MoorePhysics #philanthropy #scienceresearch #sciencephilanthropy #physicsresearch
Congratulations to Kyle Leach on his 2025 Francis M. Pipkin Award win, for 'initiating and establishing new measurement techniques using rare-isotope-doped superconducting sensors as sensitive probes of fundamental physics in the electroweak sector.' We asked Kyle what it meant to win this Award: "I am truly honored to receive this award from the American Physical Society. It has been a pleasure driving these new scientific directions in strong collaboration with TRIUMF over the past several years. The ISAC facility at TRIUMF has provided world-class access to high-intensity rare isotope beams that have allowed us to pursue new avenues in precision electroweak physics for many years. In particular, the implantation station is where we have embedded the beryllium-7 ions into our superconducting sensors since the first tests in 2018 for what became the BeEST Experiment — a collaboration that include several TRIUMF scientists as founding members. We are only at the beginning of this exciting new area of research, and have plans to expand the efforts at TRIUMF through our collaboration with Dr. Annika Lennarz to perform a large range of precision measurements for fundamental and applied science using radioisopes from ISAC. Our collaborations will always maintain a strong Canadian component, and I am grateful for all of the support that TRIUMF has provided over the years and look forward to the future." Bravo, Kyle! As policymakers increasingly need to address complex challenges like climate change, public health and technological advancement, science advisors can play a vital role. A recent Nautilus article co-authored by Jon Kaye, Anna M. Dulencin, PhD, Michael Akinwumi, and Elizabeth Christopherson, highlights how the right expertise can lead to better informed policy choices. It argues that sound policy depends on integrating scientific evidence with practical governance. The Moore Foundation has long played a role in expanding access to expert advisors at the federal and state levels. We believe science-informed policy decisions will foster better outcomes for society. ➡️ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e5uBJYeE

With coral reefs facing unprecedented stress leading to bleaching events that often cause them to perish, researchers are hoping to use information in the genomes of corals and their supportive symbionts to understand and potentially restore vital reef ecosystems. 🧬 Scientists at Wellcome Sanger Institute are generating high-quality coral and symbiont genomes, bringing hope to coral conservation worldwide. 🤿 Dive into the research in their recent blog. The Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics project is supported by our Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiative, led by Jon Kaye. #sciencereaearch #sciencephilanthropy #symbiosis #aquaticsymbiosis
Coral reefs, the rainforests of the ocean, are hotspots of biodiversity that are critically important for global ecosystems. However, sadly, warmer temperatures are now bleaching our planet’s corals, at an alarming rate, and placing these fragile ecosystems in grave danger. 🌊 Our latest blog delves into the science behind why this is happening and how research can help. 🤿 Hear from the researchers studying the DNA of corals and algae about the difficulties they face, and the research efforts in place to better understand how to protect the reefs. 🔽 https://lnkd.in/efxS_--e 📸 Image credit: Morgan Bennet Smith
