A few days back I was at a fireside chat at National Louis University and the moderator, who was a Community Psychology major asked me what do I mean by “Democracy Starts from the Block.” I responded, “I don’t know man, I was just trying to sound presidential after reading Obama’s books on organizing. I could say a lot, like you have to jog a few blocks before you work your way up to a mile. I could say we need to start talking about democracy in community every day, not just every 4 years. I have all these cool quotes tryning to sound Obama like: The Mayor doesn’t demand that you get to know your neighbors, but if you want your block to be safer, you have to demand that of yourself. There’s no Alderman demanding that you pick up trash in your alley, but if you want there to be less rats born in your alley, you better demand that of yourself. I have all of these cool quotes, but the best way I’ve ever heard it said was to the guy that showed up to volunteer with my org a couple times. I asked him why he keeps showing up. Why do you keep volunteering man? He said, “Man, I just like being around positive shit.” lol. I love that answer man. I wish I had the courage to say that on tv or to that college student the other day. Im going to make a shirt that says that for real, with Volunteer on the back. Truthfully though, solutions from #local level, from the micro level make a huge impact. My organization is the on ramp to community engagement in the city. We’re the 87th and Lafeyette ramp to getting involved. Where you see that family selling watermelons and that guy dancing in front of Jewels with no shirt. That’s us. Today was special. I got to organize near Oblock. Yall heard of oblock for sure man. Shouts to all the rappers man. Shouts to my son for the support out here too. Young Justice Our first block club cleanup of the year with Morning Star was a success! If your company wants to join in on our block club cleanups this summer, just hit us up at www.formyblock.org for corporate #volunteer opportunities. #oblock #myblockmyhoodmycity #love #positivity #community

Heitman’s employee resource network POCA (People of Color and Allies) recently hosted an on-site volunteer event in partnership with My Block, My Hood, My City (M3). Our participating colleagues created 100 signs for the March on Madison, to support ending gun violence in Chicago. We also heard from M3’s inspirational CEO, Jahmal Cole, on how small, local actions can drive big, important changes in our community!  #TransformTomorrowToday #CorporateSocialResponsibility

Pulling up to parks with portable hoops, filling the gaps, making it fun for the kids in the neighborhood- street ball is needed for the physical, mental, and social health of this city. Can’t even believe I have to say that #basketball courts aren’t magnets for #violence It might look easy, but we’re a small non profit doing the most. We absolutely need you to grab a yard sign, make a donation, help us buy more portable hoops, and #savestreetball 🔗to donate below. Thank you!! www.formyblock.org

There’s not a single outdoor hoop in Beverly, so I pulled up to Ridge Park with a portable hoop and my Kobe’s. Just making moves, man. We’re doing our best to decriminalize basketball, #SaveStreetball, and give kids positive outlets all over Chicago. You might be thinking… #Streetball in Beverly? Kids hoop everywhere- from the South Side all the way to #Slovenia (shouts to Luka Doncic). In Beverly though, a teenager named Elias started a petition to bring the hoops back. I reached out to him and told him about our #SaveStreetball initiative and let him know I’d bring the portable hoops to the park this weekend. We met up at Ridge Park. Normally, I ask for forgiveness- not permission, but I figured the park district would trip if I just set up my hoops in the parking lot without speaking to them first and I want to be a great partner with the park district (and whoever else wants to #savestreetball and save lives this summer), so I walked in to the cultural center at Ridge Park and asked permission to use the parking lot to save some lives. They said no. No worries though; I’m a real community organizer and I love this work. Pops say, “if the mountain was smooth nobody could climb it.” So I started knocking on doors around the park, asking residents if I could set up on their block. Sure enough, one of the first doors I knocked on I met a Beverly resident who was cool, knew of my org, and loved the initiative. He gave me permission to set up in front of his home. So we set up a portable hoop right next to the #park It took all night setting up these snazzy, portable, shatter proof backboards with breakaway rims. Shouts to all of y’all that made a donation to help purchase one of these portable hoops. Please keep supporting. We have a small but mighty team at My Block. I came through ready to crossover whoever needed to be crossed up. Turns out I was one of the first to get sent to the bench in knockout. We also played 21 and 2-on-2. The kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. Weather was great too. You’ll see us pulling up in more parks and on more blocks every weekend the weather allows. We’re tryna save lives with this #savestreetball campaign. Please make a donation and/or request a portable hoop on your block. We’ll pull up and hoop with you. www.formyblock.org #savestreetball #basketball #chicago #beverly #decriminalizebasketball #citylife

On this last day of Black History Month I just want to say, it’s always an honor being invited to speak to corporations and universities. It’s a nice feeling being valued by all the Black Employee Resource groups and the DEI officers and the HR departments that advocate for me to share my story and provoke some thoughtful conversation. As an activist, I’m able to challenge organizational culture in a way that employees of color can’t. For those employees though, their form of activism is getting me into the corporations to speak in the first place. Or maybe it’s getting their teams out to volunteer on the block with my org. Could be as simple as making a contribution and encouraging their co-workers to follow us on IG. I think that’s all dope, man. It takes us all working together to make a difference: an activist on the block and an activist in the boardroom, the streets and the spreadsheets. I’m proud to see people of color in positions of power at some of the world’s best corporations and universities and you know I always try my best to show up for them. I know I have to hit a home run every time because they’re dealing with chicanery on the daily. They know I’m here for them every February, but God willing, I’ll keep getting these opportunities outside of Black History Month. Either way, grateful folks are willing to listen. 👉🏿 Bit.ly/Cardigansvshoodies #blackhistorymonth #love #black #dei #diversity #equity #inclusion #life #people #mlk #hr #employeeresourcegroups #hoodievscardigans

#BearDown I know Justin Fields won’t see this because he unfollowed the Bears, but I just wanna say that as a Black man, seeing the @chicagobears draft a Black QB was a proud moment for me. It’s #BlackHistoryMonth so let’s speak on it. “Let’s Go!!!” That was the text to my friends when I heard we drafted Fields. You know I grew up watching Randall Cunningham and loving Mike Vick at Virginia Tech. I didn’t even know Fields could scramble like that when we drafted him, but I knew he was a great prospect. I’m not a G.M. I just love the Bears. In fact, I love the Bears so much that I actually wear my Warby Parker prescription glasses when the game comes on (and I have a 55 inch screen TV). But it doesn’t take prescription glasses to see that Fields isn’t the whole problem. To me, Justin Fields is the best QB, Black or White, I’ve ever seen in that Bears uniform. We all know he has to keep improving, I’m trying my best to keep improving everyday as well. I think the Bears should keep Fields. Y’all see the fans cheering for him. His own teammates are vouching for him. We need to support the man and give him some credit for what he’s done so far. Either way though, we have a Black starting QB, a Black General Manager, and a Black team President. Appreciate greatness, man. Speaking of, I wore my #savestreetball sweater when I spoke with Justin last year. I was telling him that they’re taking basketball hoops down in an effort to reduce crime. We all know that’s not right. Parks are for everybody and both Justin and the Bears understood that. Thanks for everything they’ve done for my org, but now we need your help. Keep an eye out for our Save Streetball campaign. https://lnkd.in/gdMDhYmA #nflcombine #justinfields #nfl #inspiration #inspirechange #black #writersofinstagram #warbyparker #team #jahmalcole #hope #blackqb #calebwilliams #life
