We are the UK government’s National Technical Authority for physical and personnel protective security

About us

The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) is part of MI5 and is the National Technical Authority for physical and personnel protective security. By making the UK more resilient to national security threats, we help to make the UK safe. We help organisations understand the range of threats they and the UK face, for example from terrorism, espionage, and state actors. Based on our world-leading research and development programme and the latest intelligence, we provide advice and guidance on what organisations can do to minimise their risk through how they operate day to day. In March 2023, NPSA absorbed the responsibilities of the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI), but with a broader remit, reflecting the fact that the threats the UK faces today extend far beyond critical national infrastructure. • In our next interview for International Women’s Day and British Science Week, we speak with Helen, who tells us about her career as an Explosive Chemist in NPSA.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲? I’m quite the hybrid, training originally as a Microbiologist, but later becoming an Explosive Chemist specialising in synthesis and detection. I now consider myself as a physical security specialist with expertise in synthetic chemistry.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗣𝗦𝗔? I specialise in understanding the threats posed by chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) materials. I work with our partners to understand the materials chosen by terrorist organisations, then look to study the physical and chemical properties of those materials to determine the risk they pose to the UK. Beyond this, I also lead the teams responsible for developing ways to harden our physical environment to protect against terrorist threats, through building protection and hostile vehicle mitigation.   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲? This role is diverse and enables me to apply my scientific training in a way which can protect the UK from terrorist threats. It is hugely satisfying to know all of NPSA’s advice and guidance is underpinned by thorough scientific understanding and application.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀? There are many challenges and being a step ahead of our adversaries who wish to cause the UK’s people and assets harm is possibly the greatest. Conducting robust scientific research can be lengthy, and costly, and within the UK, draws on a small pool of specialist resource with the necessary skills to work in such sensitive areas. That said, we endeavour to look ahead and understand the threat long before we experience it.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯? It’s difficult to pick just one; but knowing that science is at the forefront of protecting the UK, is high on the list. On a personal level, knowing that the work that I do makes a difference in countering the threat from the use of CBRNE materials is hugely rewarding.   Read more about CBRN threats here: https://lnkd.in/eEbja4KY   #InternationalWomensDay #BritishScienceWeek #WomenInSTEM

  • In a month-long celebration of International Women’s Day and British Science Week, today we hear from Sophie about her work as an Explosive Chemist in NPSA.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲? I am an Explosive Chemist, specialising in understanding the risk posed by homemade explosives (HMEs) and the chemicals that are used to make them.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗣𝗦𝗔? I am the team leader and programme manager for the Novel & Improvised Materials Characterisation (NIMC) programme. Our team focuses on understanding the threat from HMEs.   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲? I’ve always enjoyed science and wanted to use my chemistry knowledge in an interesting and challenging way, where I can see the positive impact of my work. By understanding the threat, my work ensures measures are in place to protect our people and infrastructure. It also supports law enforcement in identifying potentially dangerous situations and responding accordingly. A key part of this is providing advice and guidance for first responders who may find themselves faced with this threat.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀? The threat can change rapidly. We must try and stay one step ahead, predicting what precursor chemicals or HMEs may be used in the future, so we can make sure we are prepared.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯? Hearing from members of the emergency services who have used our guidance products to help them in their role.   To find out more about our guidance for emergency services, visit https://lnkd.in/edWpwE-C   To hear more from Sophie head to the MI5 Instagram page. #InternationalWomensDay #BritishScienceWeek #WomenInSTEM

  • NPSA provides advice and guidance on protective security, backed by the expertise of specialists in their fields. Due to the nature of the work, our experts do not publicly disclose their identities, but throughout March we will be profiling some of the women in STEM working behind the scenes to keep the country safe...   Today, we speak to Kate*, PhD about her work on insider risk and personnel security.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲? I am a psychologist and behavioural scientist.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗣𝗦𝗔? I specialise in the people aspects of insider threat. Why and how do people commit insider acts? I study human behaviour and motivation, and use this research to help guide organisations on how they can protect themselves and mitigate the risk of insider events. Beyond this, I also lead the teams responsible for all aspects of personnel security advice. This includes developing guidance and tools to help any institution to foster an appropriate security culture. My technical background helps me understand how we can best motivate people to be an active part of security, and how to make this message resonate across a whole organisation.   𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲? I really value being in a role where we can use approaches grounded in sound behavioural science theories and technique, to bring real value to an organisation looking to enhance their security culture.   𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀? The people aspect of protective security is so important, but it often feels like it is not valued or understood as well as physical security, or cyber security. Being able to show the application of scientific process to this ‘softer’ side of protective security feels like an important step in making sure it is given the right level of consideration too.   𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯? I love showing how organisations can readily utilise one of their greatest assets – their people – as a vital component of their security. I feel like the work we do can help companies to unlock the vast potential there is for all their people play a part in security measures. • In case of a fire alarm, there are established procedures in place to evacuate a site. But what would you do if there’s a terrorist attack? Are the people in your building or site capable of recognising an attack, and would they know how to respond?    Simple actions, such as knowing which rooms are lockable or making it easy to report suspicious activities, can significantly enhance the preparedness of everyone in your organisation. Every second counts.    To learn more, register for the Security Control Room Operators’ or Managers’ course at https://lnkd.in/e-U9s4WJ   #ActingFastWillSaveLives #NPSA #SecurityControlRoom #Security

  • Do you screen bags that are brought onto your premises, venue, or event? If so, we need your help.   Technology is rapidly developing that will allow high throughput screening of all bags at an individual’s walking speed. These breakthroughs offer excellent security options. But it could be difficult to compare different systems to ensure that your security needs are met.   NPSA, in collaboration with the UK Home Office and Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, are developing a technology agnostic test method. We want to make sure that this will meet industry needs. Help us by completing a short survey by 10th February. All responses will remain anonymous.   To find out more, visit https://lnkd.in/dNAR6AfM #searchandscreening #physicalsecurity #npsa
