Our latest newsletter brings our version of the "what we did this summer" report. We've been working hard to build more creative thinkers and team facilitators in the domain of naval warfare while continuing to strengthen connections between Naval Postgraduate School and the joint force. Some highlights: In July, we hosted a team of military-focused storytellers to run a workshop on crafting narratives for a purpose. > In this case, our purpose was preparing for the scenarios used in NPS’ annual Warfare Innovation Continuum (WIC) Workshop, which runs next month, 23-26 September. Join us! In June, USMC Chair for Information Dr. Christopher Paul visited the Combat Support Training Exercise, where he saw Army reserve solders creatively build and deploy decoys to support logistics in an exercise focused on drone warfare. And we pay homage to Maj. Gen. Bill Mullen (Ret.), who supported NWSI’s Critical Thinking and Learning branch by collaboratively teaching, researching, and writing with NPS students and faculty. "The Naval Warfare Studies Institute (NWSI) plays a pivotal role in this collaboration" with Naval Warfare Centers through the Warfighter Driven Challenge (WDC) Series, which "is designed to bridge the gap between academic research at the Naval Postgraduate School and the practical, operational challenges faced by the Navy and Marine Corps. The initiative is designed to create a platform for junior officers (JOs) to collaborate directly with civilian researchers at Naval Warfare Centers (WFCs), fostering a dialogue that identifies and addresses real-world warfighter problems." Lt. Cmdr. Adam Johnson is engaging in this collaboration now, and shares the strengths he sees of the program and of NWSI. NWSI leverages "its extensive partnerships and knowledge to guide students from theoretical learning to practical implementation, ensuring our research aligns with and supports fleet needs." New knowledge from academic research enables innovative solutions and cognitive advantage. Earlier this month, NPS hosted the vice provosts and deans of research from Department of Defense (DOD) military education institutions (MEI) to discuss common challenges facing research programs, as well as how to better meet research needs by sharing ideas on solutions and potential collaborative efforts to gain efficiency and enhance effectiveness. Institutions represented included the service academies, Air Force Institute of Technology, Naval and Army War Colleges, National Intelligence University, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Leaders committed to a set of actions and ongoing collaboration. “These research collaborations not only benefit the service in their results, but are critical to the education of the students at our institutions through advancement of their professional knowledge and critical thinking skills crucial for the future leaders of our nation,” said Coast Guard Capt. Gregory J. Hall, Ph.D., Vice Provost for Research at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. U.S. Air Force Col. Dan Finkelstein, Associate Dean of Research at the U.S. Air Force Academy, added, “One of the strengths of the U.S. military is its ability to bring a truly joint force to the battlefield. I think the same can be said for research and higher education. Our ability to collaborate across our research portfolios is important to the joint force’s development both technically and academically. Those translate to the intellectual and materiel capabilities needed for the future fight.” “The gathering of the deans of research from across the military education institutions is critical to ensure synchronization and integration of efforts in the increasingly complex and changing higher education research landscape,” said Army Col. Brad C. McCoy, Associate Dean of Research at the U.S. Military Academy. “The relationships forged across our institutions enable us all to focus our efforts to increase administrative efficiency and the effectiveness of research programs for our students and faculty, ultimately leveraging the intellectual capital of the MEI enterprise."
