About us

Through community, consultation and coaching, education, New Nurse Academy provides new concepts of living life by design that allows Nurses to be their most authentic and fullest version of themselves. It’s a NEW mindset for an industry where spiritual alignment and emotional intelligence is not prioritized for a workforce that cares for others for a living. In order to change the current “toxic” culture of nursing, we must first change the people who make up the culture. A NEW Nurse must be born. And New Nurse Academy aims to provide the tools to transform Nurses to practice at their highest vibration, the top of their scope and provide the best care to patients, and themselves.

The mission of New Nurse Academy has always been to agitate and disrupt limited beliefs in Nursing, using emotional intelligence, to spark a transformation in the culture of nursing. And we do this in two ways: 1️⃣ Redefining leadership from the bedside to the board room. 2️⃣ Reimagining who Nurses are, and how they manage clinical roles with their authentic selves. New Nurse Academy provides tools for the NEW Nurse mindset, pioneering NEW insight on integrating personal & professional development for the Authentic Nurse. We're excited to share the newest piece to our series, Human Design for Nurses.

The power of emotional intelligence is just as important as cognitive intelligence. Especially in Nursing. So How Do You Develop Emotional Intelligence? 1. Know our emotions. Feel it, notice it and name it. This is how you get to self-awareness - the ability to recognize feelings as they happen. We have to learn how to manage our emotions. This also includes learning how to have personal power, internal motivation, emotional self-control, and delayed gratification. 2. Read the room and learn to recognize emotions in others. Develop empathy and be attuned to what others want or need. —————- New Nurse Academy helps Nurses lean into their intuition and grow their emotional intelligence to allow them to make strategic professional development decisions. A reminder that Black Women have the right to feel however they want to today. And that’s ok. With anticipatory stress of current events in politics and the preparation of disrespect, misogynior, and patriarchy that’s going to come their way on all media platforms - Black Nurses may be feeling optimistic, excited, empowered, deflated, tired and devalued at the same time. And they may show up to work with these feelings and emotions hidden or on their sleeves. And that may be challenging to show up bright, cheery and full of confidence. Let’s be mindful to hold space for them as they care for others. Instead of asking, “How are you?”, try: ✔️What color is your heart today? ✔️How can I support you? ✔️What have you done just for you today? ✔️What are your top three feelings today? ✔️What thoughts are circling in your brain? Nurses are humans 1st. Feeling and emotions can be hard to shift, especially while still processing. Being empathetic and considerate of this is a great example of emotional intelligence in the workplace

There's a lot of evidence that proves the importance of soft skills in Nursing leadership and during the recruiting/ hiring process. Soft skills include professionalism, teamwork, communication, and listening skills, as well as time management, problem-solving, leadership, and empathy. And we know these soft skills are essential in the workplace because they highlights a person's emotional and social intelligence. It tells Human Resources and Leadership how well an employee fits with the culture of the team. But what if we expanded these soft skills for the employees to determine if THEY fit with the culture of the team and expectations of how they show up as a Nurse. New Nurse Academy offers a Nursing by Design, an employee engagement assessment that decreases the potential for burnout an increases a Nurses's connection to the work they do.      Linda Roszak Burton from the Wharton Health Care Management Alumni Association stated in her article that, cultivating a grateful mindset allows people to readily shift from our built-in negativity bias to examining what's going well in your life, what values reinforce your decisions, and which strengths allow you to be at your best as consistently as possible." She also states this self-regulation of recognizing unhealthy emotions and reframing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors will deepen your emotional intelligence capacity. And with greater emotional intelligence awareness, you have a choice in how you interact with and join in the experiences of others.

My 2 Cents... It's that time of year to be reflective, count your blessings, and be thankful for what you have, what you've done, and what's to come. I'm reading a lot of articles on gratitude integrated with emotional intelligence and leadership and notice that a lot of these articles are not from the healthcare industry. Surprise, Surprise!!! Per the article attached, gratitude is thought to be crucial to employees’ efficiency, success, and productivity while also improving organizational citizenship behaviors, prosocial organizational behavior, and the organizational climate. Are we talking enough about the power of gratitude in Nursing? https://lnkd.in/edJ4eCAG

Gratitude is linked to neural activity associated with moral cognition, perspective-taking, and fairness. There's also research to support that gratitude shows evidence for building positive relationships and increasing empathy. Practicing gratitude creates increased awareness of your emotions, values, strengths, and a greater understanding of others - emotional intelligence. A sign of emotional intelligence in nursing is using gratitude to allows for self-reflection of emotions, motivators, and perception of others. My 2 Cents... I am intentional with frequently telling my team how grateful I am for them and the work they do. I am also intentional with expressing my gratitude for my career, my team and the ability to show up in Nursing as my authentic self. "Gratitude can be defined as a positive emotion felt after receiving something valuable. And science has shown that people who are grateful feel happier." So let me ask you... What does gratitude mean to you? What does it look like in your organization? How do you show gratitude to and with your team? https://lnkd.in/e5Jc6quw
