Did you know NASA's Ingenuity helicopter leveraged open-source code? Never heard of the helicopter? Click this link: https://lnkd.in/gwkDYuSM Three years ago, NASA's Ingenuity helicopter took its first flight on Mars. This wasn’t just NASA's doing—about 12,000 volunteer coders unknowingly helped by sharing their code on GitHub. The Power of Open Source: GitHub, with over 100 million developers, played a key role. NASA found the perfect software to make Ingenuity fly by tapping into open-source code. This collaboration shows how open-source platforms can drive innovation. AI: The New Co-Pilot in Coding: We’re in the age of AI, and tools like GitHub’s Copilot, powered by OpenAI’s models, are changing the game in software development. Copilot predicts and generates code, making coding less tedious and more fun. Thomas Domke, CEO of GitHub, mentioned, “Right now, AI writes 50% of the code on GitHub, and this is expected to rise to 80%” . Which can be a good thing and a bad thing. Education and the Future Workforce: AI tools are reshaping what skills future developers need. Thomas Domke highlights that creative thinking, problem-solving, and system design are becoming more important as AI makes coding accessible to everyone. Imagine, even those with minimal coding experience can now create software! Economic Impact: A Harvard University and GitHub study revealed that AI-assisted coding could boost global GDP by $1.5 trillion by 2030. This shows how AI can create economic value and change job roles in software development. As Domke put it, “The age of AI has created additional demands on software companies, not only maintaining existing software but also adding AI features and developing AI strategies” . Link to the research: https://lnkd.in/gDk-zd4Z Link to press release: https://lnkd.in/gCceXWPh Ethical Considerations: While AI brings many benefits, it's crucial to use it responsibly. GitHub is committed to ensuring AI-generated code is secure and ethical. Domke reassures us, “We are committed to the responsible use of AI, ensuring security and ethical standards in all AI-generated code” At OCIO, we’re inspired by these advancements and are always exploring how AI can enhance our tech capabilities and improve public services with cautious optimism. By embracing AI and open-source collaborations safely, we goal ourselves to foster innovation and drive efficiency across state operations. hashtag #AI #SoftwareDevelopment #Innovation #OpenSource #TechForGood #OCIONevada Listen to the podcast: TEDX https://lnkd.in/g3A8kZxs

The AI Cat is out of the bag... well it has been for a while. Longer than most people think. Artificial Intelligence has been around at least since the early 1950s when researchers at the University of Manchester made a machine that could play checkers and a machine that could play chess. Fast forward to the end of 2022, OpenAI casually released an early demo of ChatGPT, and suddenly, AI was all anyone could talk about. Even if you were steeped in the tech industry, it seemed to explode out of nowhere like a sci-fi story come to life. High schoolers had a whole new method for cheating on homework, coders had a new automated tool that could debug code across dozens of programming languages, and users watched in amazement as the blinking cursors unspooled entire stories or screenplays in a matter of seconds. AI's re-emergence brings both promise and peril. The excitement is palpable, but we must ground our enthusiasm in reality. AI is not a panacea; it’s a powerful tool that, if used wisely, can significantly enhance our operations. The OCIO is committed to harnessing AI to streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance the overall citizen experience. Yet, we must acknowledge the limitations and risks. AI's capabilities are impressive, but it’s not infallible, and we must remain vigilant against over-reliance and misuse. Inspired by Deloitte’s findings, (Link: https://lnkd.in/g9TPyKey are adopting life event-based service delivery models. These models, which proactively address citizens' needs during significant life events, promise to simplify interactions with government agencies and provide seamless, integrated services. By automating data transfers and improving inter-agency collaboration, we aim to reduce wait times and improve service accessibility for all Nevadans. However, this requires a delicate balance. Automation brings efficiency but also raises concerns about data privacy and security, which we must not overlook.
