Discover some of the preliminary observations from our Northwest Passage Ocean Science Expedition and how this links to the 6 Tipping Points that we journeyed through over the past few months. "We can today, scientifically, define [ the Arctic ] as Earth's ground zero. It's warming 2-3x faster than the planet as a whole. And we know today, and we learn more and more, that the Arctic is connected with Tipping Element Systems, with weather systems, with sea level rise, and [ is connected ] even all the way down to Antarctica through different cascade connections." - Johan Rockström. In this webinar, Keith Tuffley, Isak and Alex Rockström chat with Professor Johan Rockström on the Arctic Tipping Points, what the crew observed in their journey through this critical region, and what this means. 🎥 Watch the full webinar on YouTube! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eZMXmpHz ➡️ Follow Ocean Science Expedition for more! #OceanScienceExpedition #AbelTasmanYacht #NorthwestPassage #TippingPoints #PlanetaryTippingPoints #PlanetaryBoundaries

Essential reads 📖 for business leaders (and all of us) to navigate our changing planet! Our Northwest Passage expedition ⛵️ highlighted to us just how quickly and significantly changes are occurring in the Arctic ❄️, and the ocean. And how these changes are impacting the entire planet and all of humanity - wherever we may live. This is why CEOs, Boards of Directors, banks, and investors need to learn more about the Arctic and our ocean, and to identify the roles all of us must play to invest in solutions to these global problems 🌎. We have gathered 6 must-read reports and resources that provide the latest science-based assessment of the health of our planet. Four of these have been published while we were at sea over the past 4 months, and all of them are far more alarming and urgent than previous editions. 1️⃣ Planetary Boundaries - 'Planetary Health Check 2024: A Scientific Assessment of the State the Planet' - https://lnkd.in/ejy_nW-E 2️⃣ Tipping Points - 'Understanding climate Tipping Points with Johan Rockström: TEDx Talks' - https://lnkd.in/eenMg8Sj 3️⃣ Climate - 'The 2024 state of the climate report: Perilous times on planet Earth' - Ripple et al., 2024 https://lnkd.in/d-vVGuKY 4️⃣ Ocean - 'The Ocean as a Solution to Climate Change: Update Opportunities for Action' - High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy https://lnkd.in/etFXbzqs 5️⃣ Biodiversity - '2024 Living Planet Report: A System in Peril' - WWF & Zoological Society of London (ZSL) https://lnkd.in/eK7TcGnB 6️⃣ Plastics - 'Plastic Pollution' - Our World in Data https://lnkd.in/etRai7r Dive into these resources and help lead the way in shaping a sustainable future. ➡️ Follow Ocean Science Expedition for more! 📸 2 - Sylvestre Campe, 4 - Ramon Gonçalves / MEDIA.etc #OceanScienceExpedition #AbelTasmanYacht #NorthwestPassage #TippingPoints #PlanetaryTippingPoints #PlanetaryBoundaries #Sustainability #BusinessLeadership #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #OceanClimate #BiodiversityLoss #ClimateChange #PlasticCrisis

Mission ACCOMPLISHED! ⛵️ 🧬 The North-west Passage Ocean Science Expedition has landed safely in Alaska with over 100 days worth of Arctic biodiversity data collected! After four months of battling harsh Arctic conditions, navigating through icebergs, and collecting valuable scientific data, we are so excited to announce that Keith Tuffley and his crew have successfully completed their Northwest Passage expedition! Landing safely in Alaska the Abel Tasman has sailed over 13,000 km, crossing 6 of the 9 global tipping points located in the Arctic. Throughout this incredible journey, the team has been collecting eDNA samples every day using NatureMetrics' kits, which will help paint a comprehensive picture of life in these remote Arctic waters, from microscopic organisms to large marine mammals. Key highlights from the expedition: - 100+ days at sea - 13,000+ km sailed - Over 100 eDNA and microplastic samples collected filling ocean-data gaps - Sightings of diverse Arctic wildlife, including whales, seals, and seabirds - Navigated through challenging ice fields and extreme weather conditions The data collected during this expedition will provide crucial insights into Arctic marine biodiversity. As climate change continues to impact this sensitive ecosystem, the information gathered will be invaluable for conservation efforts and our understanding of global environmental changes. Congratulations to the entire team for this remarkable achievement: Isak Rockström, Alex Rockström, Sylvestre Campe, Gama Rodrigues, Cléo Campe, Sebastian Sánchez, Ramon Goncalves, Karina Oliani, Kester Haynes, Rakel Thorell, and Meg O'Hara. Today is an historic day, marking the completion of a triumphant 17-week journey of exploration and scientific discovery! It is with great joy and admiration that we celebrate Villars Institute Board Member Keith Tuffley and his crew’s four month Ocean Science Expedition on a 75-foot Bermuda Schooner – the #AbelTasmanYacht – through the legendary Northwest Passage. They arrived at their final destination in Homer, Alaska, today. With skipper Isak Rockström and first mate Alex Rockström at the helm, the team set sail from Bergen, Norway, on 10 June 2024, and have since journeyed through six of the planet’s #tippingpoints, witnessing the rapid changes occurring in the ocean, the ice, and the land in the Arctic: a vital early warning system for planet’s health. Their mission? To gather breakthrough data to better understand the health of arctic marine ecosystems, bringing science to the attention of the global business and financial community, and by involving our young Villars Fellows thanks to satellite technology, informing and empowering both current and future generations to shift mindsets, raise ambitions and take meaningful action. Keith Tuffley explains more, with stunning footage from the journey. #OceanScience #NorthwestPassage #MarineEcosystems
