  • Our statement on the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) final judgement in the Google antitrust case 👇 On Friday, the DOJ submitted a robust final remedy package, including corrective measures, in its landmark antitrust litigation against Google, signaling a decisive shift toward stronger antitrust enforcement. “The DOJ’s decision underscores a clear bipartisan consensus across the last three administrations in favor of vigorous antitrust enforcement. Strong antitrust policies are essential not only to ensure open, competitive marketplaces but also to secure American technological leadership, foster innovation, and protect our national security. America’s global competitive edge in technology depends on an environment where innovation can flourish, free from monopolistic control.” 💬 Gus Rossi, director at Omidyar Network The DOJ’s final corrective measures maintain essential elements from the previous administration, including prohibiting Google’s exclusive payments to potential competitors, requiring the divestiture of Chrome, and mandating the licensing of search data to competitors. These measures reaffirm the United States’ commitment to promoting competition, innovation, and safeguarding national security in the global technology marketplace.

🚀 This past weekend during #SXSW, Coworker Solidarity Fund's Executive Director, Antonio Aguilera, took part in a thought-provoking discussion on #MeaningfulWork in the age of #AI. He had the privilege of sharing the stage with Sharon Cho, 조우리, Tim Newman, and Brian Merchant, engaging in a powerful conversation about the future of work and technology. Antonio highlighted the critical role of workers on the frontlines of workplace activism and organizing. He emphasized that every day, working people are stepping up to ensure that technologies like AI are implemented in a way that creates safer and fairer tech workplaces and products — for workers and users alike. 🎤 A huge appreciation to Omidyar Network for hosting the conversation. Let’s keep building communities of care and action to shape a future with The Tech We Want.

Great to share the stage this week at the Council of Institutional Investors conference with our co-host David Kazansky of American Federation of Teachers, and panelists Nora M. Denzel, Sharon Hendricks and Hilary Irby to talk about AI governance.    We discussed how investors and corporate directors can work together to ensure appropriate oversight over AI deployment to capture the benefits of the technology, while addressing material risks and mitigating downsides. And we dug into questions like: What does strong board oversight of AI look like?  How do we more precisely diagnose and assess the most material AI risks for different types of companies, ranging from safety and security, to data protection, to impacts on workers and jobs? And what disclosures would help investors better understand the quality of companies’ AI governance?     A few key takeaways   -Corporate boards are significantly ramping up their focus and capacity on AI governance – NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) offers great resources on this front – notably their Blue Ribbon Commission on Technology Leadership in the Boardroom   -Institutional investors like CalSTRS are getting more sophisticated in how they assess AI opportunities and risks – looking at issues including safety and security, data privacy, and the workforce and environmental impacts of AI at both an enterprise and portfolio/systems level. This is a growing focus not only for pension fund investment and stewardship teams – but for pension boards and trustees in their governance roles.    -It’s still early in defining what ‘good’ looks like in corporate AI governance – and there’s a need and opportunity to create voluntary standards that align both investors and corporate directors on best practices for how companies assess, disclose, and measure the most material impacts of AI on their core business performance – and on their stakeholders   This is work that we at Omidyar Network are excited to move forward – as we see responsible AI as one of the critical next frontiers in responsible investing and corporate governance

Narrative Change, Cultural Strategy, and Strategic Communications

💭 "As a society, we are experiencing a crisis of imagination" 💥 These words from Kamala Avila-Salmon during our panel hit hard. In a world that often feels out of control, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong instead of the possibilities for what could go right. But if there’s one thing I took away from The Tech We Want's Light House event, it’s that creativity and imagination aren’t luxuries—they’re essential tools for navigating today’s challenges and working toward a better future. This was at the heart of the two panels I had the honor of curating: 🎤 Control+Alt+Laugh: Comedy as a Force for Social Change. Coming from a Jamaican family who has always laughed its way through hard times (for better or worse!) I’ve long believed in the power of humor to process the world. So I was thrilled when comedian Austin Nasso joined us. His set was a masterclass in using laughter to spark reflection, and our fireside chat reminded me how much we need vulnerability and shared gifts in moments of difficulty. Comedy isn’t just about making people laugh; it’s about creating an irresistible shared experience that makes us think—and, hopefully, act. 🌟 Between Dystopia and Delight: Powering Human Stories for a Digital Age. Joined by Kamala, Lynn Renee Maxcy, Sarah Papazoglakis, PhD, CIPT/CIPM, and Theresa Hice-Fromille, we built on our Sundance conversation to explore narratives that reimagine technology as a bridge to our shared humanity. We dug into the idea of connection and adaptability as technologies in their own right, the abundance of tech innovation coming from outside of the tech industry, and sci-fi as a roadmap through difficulty. These sessions reinforced that narrative change is social change! Whether through sci-fi, comedy, or the many other mediums available to us, storytelling has the power to shift perspectives, challenge norms, and even foreshadow action. And none of this work it is done in isolation. Huge shoutout to The Tech We Want, Omidyar Network, and the incredible Aniyia L. Williams for two days of pure genius — and for centering connection, joy, and celebration as critical to reimagining futures that benefit us all.

We are proud to be supporting Center for Intimacy Justice, led by Jackie Rotman, for a second year. CIJ recently released their second groundbreaking report, which found that 4 major tech platforms (TikTok, Google, Amazon, and Meta) are systemically suppressing health information for women and people of diverse genders. Their first report led Meta to change their health advertising policies. You can read more about their report on their website (https://lnkd.in/eauCkaY) and in WIRED Magazine (https://lnkd.in/g6EBfZRA). Leadership and Technology for Social Justice

It was such a treat to be in conversation with Sharon Cho, 조우리, Tim Newman and Brian Merchant in Austin during #SXSW about the topic of #MeaningfulWork in the Age of #AI. I learned a lot from their perspectives and expertise, and it was a great opportunity to elevate the bravery of working people on the frontlines of workplace activism and organizing — especially those leading the fight to make AI and the tech industry a safe place for all workers and users alike. The panel was an invitation to take a break from the gloomy narratives about AI and the negative impacts it may have for workers; and instead, to focus on the opportunities that technologies like this could bring to make everyone's work more meaningful. It all starts with each of us finding space to dream about the future we want, so we can then build communities of care and action to organize and resource each other toward building our shared dream, including the The Tech We Want. Thanks so much Judy Alterado and Omidyar Network for hosting such a great event, and bringing together the amazing people who attended. 💖 ✨
