Enabling IoT devices & services to securely communicate over IP
About us
The Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) is a global, member-driven technical standards development organization. Its 500+ members are working to enable trust, interoperability, and secure communication between IP-connected IoT devices and services. It does this by fostering collaboration between stakeholders across the IoT ecosystem to deliver the freely-available ISO/IEC specifications, including the Secure IP Device Framework, its open-source reference implementation, and an industry-recognized certification program. This enables innovative new secure use cases and user experiences, reduces development costs, integration complexity and time to market, and simplifies regulatory compliance to IoT security and privacy baselines. OCF members work across the enterprise layers of infrastructure, applications, and data. They collaborate to co-create and deploy systems in an open and standardized way, enabling devices to communicate over IP, regardless of form factor, operating system, service provider, transport technology, or ecosystem. The vertical-agnostic technology has already seen significant adoption in the smart home sector and is now enabling the transition to secure, intelligent, Building Automation Systems (BAS) based on IP connectivity networks.

A highly productive and collaborative meeting took place recently, bringing together representatives from across the IoT value chain to identify how the Gemini Framework can be used to deploy a robust National Cyber Physical Infrastructure strategy. Thank you to KevinLAB, Korea Photonics Technology Institute, Korean Association of Smart Homes, Korea Agency for Infrastructure technology Advancement (#KAIA), Data People Connected, Healthy Homes Hub, Liverpool John Moores University, Innovate UK, Digital Twin Hub. OCF is following the current project closely and looks forward to sharing results and next steps for phase two as the stakeholders work towards the completion of the feasibility study and a commercially viable plan for data sharing infrastructure for energy systems and carbon #NetZero. Check out OCF's latest paper on Digital Twin infrastructures: https://lnkd.in/ejasABrk #DigitalTwins #SmartCities
This afternoon, I was part of the #KAIA (Korea agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement) and Innovate UK Bi-Lateral R&D Workshop, held at Liverpool John Moores University. The session brought together global innovation leaders, bridging the UK and South Korea, to explore next-generation #IoT solutions, #DigitalTwins, and smart technologies. The UK team, Data People Connected, showcased their expertise in #DigitalTwins and #SmartCities. Their work aligns with the #Gemini Framework, a structured approach that underpins the development and connection of digital twins in the built environment. Guided by the Gemini Principles—#purpose, #trust, and #function - this framework ensures data interoperability and enables value creation across traditional boundaries. Their innovations, like the #Buttress architecture and #NodeStream platform, are future-ready solutions driving smarter, connected systems globally. These technologies are vital support systems to enable better living conditions and #HealthyHomes by using cross sectoral data to provide granular insight, and that insight to provide personalised action. Partners, KevinLAB and ETRI from South Korea, brought exceptional solutions to the table, addressing energy management, #housing, and urban challenges through cutting-edge #IoT, #AI, and #BigData platforms. The workshop touched on the work of the Open Connectivity Foundation (#OCF), the ISO-approved standard for #IoT security. For my part, I was introducing Healthy Homes Hub and highlighting some of the issues effecting the social housing sector that could benifit from the work being done. Specifically the #interopterbility of data which is essential for smart cities and puts the person and their data in the #centre of the systems supporting them. Together, with support from Innovate UK and #KAIA, this collaboration exemplifies the importance of international partnerships to accelerate technological innovation and create positive societal impact. A huge thanks to Brian Bishop for the invite and to Gyu Myoung Lee, Dr Ed Conley, Peter Curtis and all participants and hosts facilitating such an inspring session. 🚀

The Indian Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced an extended deadline for the country’s Smart Cities Mission, which will now run until March 2025. This will allow cities to complete ongoing projects, which account for around 10% of the total projects. At OCF, we’re proud that our Secure IP Device Framework was adopted as a national #standard in India earlier this year. The standard was accredited by the Bureau of Indian Standards, demonstrating the commitment of the Indian government to enabling #trust, #interoperability, and secure #communication in its rapidly growing #smarthome and #smartcity ecosystems.
