About us
The Pacific Institute envisions a world in which society, the economy, and the environment have the water they need to thrive now and in the future. In pursuit of this vision, the Institute creates and advances solutions to the world’s most pressing water challenges, such as unsustainable water management and use; climate change; environmental degradation; food, fiber, and energy production for a growing population; and basic lack of access to fresh water and sanitation. Since 1987, the Pacific Institute has cut across traditional areas of study and actively collaborated with a diverse set of stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, corporate leaders, international organizations such as the United Nations, advocacy groups, and local communities. This interdisciplinary and nonpartisan approach helps bring diverse interests together to forge effective real-world solutions.

Can Net Positive Impact significantly support our corporate water stewardship journey? The answer is yes! The #CEOWaterMandate has created a comprehensive set of tools to help you implement #NPWI as part of your strategy. Find out how ⬇️ What is NPWI? Net Positive Water Impact (#NPWI) is an initiative for companies to ensure their water contributions exceed their impacts in water-stressed regions. It addresses water availability, quality, and accessibility through site-specific impacts, company footprint, and basin-level collective action, aligning with other water stewardship approaches and supporting #SDG6. Why NPWI? NPWI improves basin health and resilience, provides business value through sustainable products, enhances societal value by improving water access, and reduces company risks related to water. It also boosts water and climate resilience and energy security. How is NPWI implemented? NPWI involves five steps: building awareness, assessment, action, and measuring progress. It focuses on reducing water withdrawal, improving water quality, and enhancing access to WASH services, with progress tracked and validated. NPWI Alignment and Guidance The guidance includes various documents and an online tracking tool, allowing companies to tailor their NPWI journey to their specific contexts. We are delighted to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed yesterday in New York between the CEO Water Mandate, a partnership between the Pacific Institute and the United Nations Global Compact, and the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). The MOU, signed during the #CEOWaterMandate full-day corporate water stewardship meeting, by Jason Morrison, Head of the CEO Water Mandate and President of the Pacific Institute, and Adrian Sym, CEO of AWS, aims to accelerate the widespread adoption of credible water stewardship practices and contribute to a water-resilient future. This is a step in the right direction that will help the CEO Water Mandate and the Water Resilience Coalition in their goal of achieving net positive water impact in 100 Priority Basins around the globe. The MOU outlines the aims of AWS and the CEO Water Mandate to lead by example through collaborative and aligned efforts in the following three areas: 💧 INFLUENCE: Increasing impact through coordinated strategies that positively influence the business community and the broader corporate water stewardship movement to demonstrate leadership and commitment to water stewardship. 💧 DATA AND CAPACITY: Enabling access to data, tools and resources in a more streamlined and coordinated way to help strengthen capacity and promote the widespread adoption of water stewardship practices. 💧 COLLECTIVE ACTION: By bringing together leaders in the water sector and fostering essential partnerships, AWS and the Mandate will catalyze collaborative initiatives in priority river basins and watersheds.
