The Pacific Institute creates and advances solutions to the world's most pressing water challenges.
About us
The Pacific Institute envisions a world in which society, the economy, and the environment have the water they need to thrive now and in the future. In pursuit of this vision, the Institute creates and advances solutions to the world’s most pressing water challenges, such as unsustainable water management and use; climate change; environmental degradation; food, fiber, and energy production for a growing population; and basic lack of access to fresh water and sanitation. Since 1987, the Pacific Institute has cut across traditional areas of study and actively collaborated with a diverse set of stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, corporate leaders, international organizations such as the United Nations, advocacy groups, and local communities. This interdisciplinary and nonpartisan approach helps bring diverse interests together to forge effective real-world solutions.

A new peer-reviewed paper was recently published by PNAS co-authored by Pacific Institute Senior Fellow and Co-Founder, Dr. Peter Gleick. As climate change intensifies, California's freshwater ecosystems--already stressed by water diversions, pollution, land development, and invasive species--will need enhanced efforts to recover and maintain their health and resilience. The paper, "Anticipating responses to climate change and planning for resilience in California's freshwater ecosystems," explores collaborative solutions to ensure #WaterResilience now and in the future. Today at World Water Week, the #CEOWaterMandate is pleased to launch the new "Water Resilience Assessment Framework Guidance for Basin Managers and Planning Authorities." This guidance is part of a three-document series tailored for specific stakeholders to address #WaterResilience. By identifying the challenges, from gradual droughts to sudden floods, this third and final #WRAFGuidance empowers basin managers and planning authorities (BMPA) to develop effective resilience strategies. The framework promotes a holistic approach, guiding BMPA to develop basin-wide strategies. It provides guidance to focus on impactful actions and tools to track progress and transparency. Researchers, water professionals, and community groups can leverage this framework to develop better tools and best practices for building resilient water systems everywhere.
