You might know Extinction Rebellion as the brazen activist group raging against the fossil fuel industry. But did you know they also advocate for citizens’ assemblies? In our latest issue of Beyond Elections, Pamela Bailey spoke with XR organizers Marijn van de Geer and Kathie Conn about the group's interest in participatory democracy.
Extinction Rebellion Is Calling for Citizens Assemblies. Here's Why.

Check out our new partnership with Solutions Now Africa – a mini-documentary about a democratic SACCO in Central Uganda
In April 2024, my team at Solutions Now Africa, in partnership with Proximate, traveled to Kasaasa, Kyotera District, Western Uganda, to film another solutions-focused documentary. As journalists, we’re trained to remain detached from our stories, but I must admit that this resilient community left a lasting impression on me. This agrarian community is transforming its fortunes by banking on a crop that is so abundant to them-maize. For years, like many farmers in Uganda, they struggled with middlemen who exploited them, keeping them in a vicious cycle of poverty. By coming together to form a savings cooperative, they’ve cut out the middlemen and are building a better future. They have formed a 30-member committee that makes investment decisions for the rest of the 300 members, after consultation. The most remarkable part (in my opinion)? They’re investing collectively in their local community school, Tatsat Community Secondary School. Even without cash, farmers can make direct maize deposits as school fees! This innovative approach is akin to the days when African communities could pay school fees with produce like sorghum, peas, or beans. 🌾 You can watch the full story here http://bit.ly/3XMuPfR Kristi Eaton

Our second issue of Beyond Elections is now live, courtesy of editor Pamela Bailey and our partners at People Powered. Beyond Elections is our newsletter on participatory democracy – a collection of stories and conversations about what democracy can look like between and beyond election cycles. Check out this issue for a wide range of stories: 🔹 Josh Lerner argues that we live in a world of "diverse democracies" – and that we'll need a "just transition" to recognize how they all work together (bit.ly/47g1U6X) 🔹 Susan C. shares an excerpt from her new book, "Public Engagement Made Easy", on how town hall meetings can be productive, not disastrous (bit.ly/3Ti9HeR) 🔹 Kudzaiishe Seti chats with us about how rural communities in Zimbabwe are developing climate policies that are more relevant than those developed in the urban capital (bit.ly/3TjdKHD) 🔹 Jon Alexander talks about his work with the New Citizen Project, and how we can build models to give citizens real power without scaring off politicians (bit.ly/4eaJJSj) Sign up for our Beyond Elections newsletter if you haven't yet! https://lnkd.in/dYiiRUc2

Not all DAF sponsors are created equal. That's the argument Gerry Roll made in a recent Chronicle of Philanthropy op-ed, where she made the case for regulation that favors community foundations over large, private gift funds like Fidelity and Schwab. Grace Chai chatted with Gerry for the latest story in our Unlocking Abundance series with Magic Cabinet, exploring the future of DAF reform.

Honored to be the co-author on this with my friend, colleague, and co-conspirator in global disability justice, Catherine Hyde Townsend. Thanks to Proximate for publishing! ♥️❤️
Advocate, infiltrator and coach towards equity and disability inclusion. Helping philanthropy (and others) get it right.
In these tumultuous times, how can philanthropy remain relevant, impactful and legitimate? In our decades of work in progressive philanthropy, the idea that wealth equals wisdom underlies a system of individual heroism. Decision-making structures are mostly hierarchical rather than communal. The disability rights movement’s mantra of “nothing about us without us” offers a concrete pathway forward for participatory philanthropy.
