About us
Since 1974, RAMS has been providing and advocating for mental health and wellness services that are centered in clients, community and culture. Historically serving Asian and Pacific Islander Americans populations, today RAMS supports those who have the least resources and opportunities to achieve their highest potential by providing integrated services that include counseling, job training, capacity building for partner organizations and advanced training of mental health professionals. Annually, the agency serves and outreaches to well over 19,000 adults, children, youth, and families, and provides services in over 30 languages, offering over 30 clinical programs in over 90 sites citywide, to meet the diverse community needs. RAMS service areas include: individual, family & group counseling with children, youth, adults, and older adults (of all ages, starting at birth); residential services, vocational training & employment services; psychology training and clinical practicum (training the next generation of culturally competent mental health professionals), youth and adult workforce development & career pathways and education (summer day camp fostering interest and mentorship in the health & human services field; jointly operating a Certificate program with SF State University); and community organizing and advocacy activities. Last Wednesday, July 24th, RAMS' CEO & President Angela Tang and Director of Community Engagement Natalie Ah Soon were invited to be a part of a roundtable discussion at the White House AA and NHPI Mental Health Convening in Washington DC. The event brought together White House representatives, US Health & Human Service representatives and Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community leaders from around the United States. Alongside esteemed AANHPI community representatives, Angela and Natalie had the opportunity to share information about the unique barriers that the AAHNPI communities experience while accessing behavioral health services as well as strategies to uplift culturally and linguistically competent practices to better serve the AAHNPI communities. Mental health is often framed as an individual issue. We seek to redefine mental health by shifting the focus to institutions, highlighting how longstanding and systemic inequities contribute to unwellness. During our 2024 AANHPI Summit on Reclaiming and Redefining Mental Health, we hosted an outstanding panel on "Unpacking the Drivers of Mental Health & (Un)Wellness," moderated by Tavae Samuelu, APF Director of Community Initiatives & Grantmaking. Our fantastic group of panelists—Amy G Lam PhD from the Korean Community Center of the East Bay (KCCEB), Kevin Niuatoa from RAMS, Inc. (Pacific Islander Wellness Initiative), and Connie Wun, Ph.D. from AAPI Women Lead—explored various factors influencing AANHPI mental health, including cultural stigma, generational differences, and access to culturally competent healthcare. The panel also discussed strategies for improving mental wellness and support systems in these communities. This engaging discussion helped to raise awareness and propose actionable solutions to address these mental health challenges. A special thank you to our panelists and their respective organizations for participating in the Summit and sharing their dedication to our community, their voices and passion, and their commitment to addressing AANHPI mental health. If you missed the panel, you can watch it on our 2024 AANHPI Summit playlist at https://lnkd.in/gqnXCS4r. #AANHPISummit2024 #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #AANHPI #AAPI
