Reverse the Red announces Reverse the Red Accelerator Award to accelerate strategic action for threatened species, with grants of up to USD 15,000 with the winners announced at the World Conservation Congress in October 2025. The Accelerator Award has been developed to mobilise innovation, refine recovery-focused strategy, increase collaboration, and support the acceleration of action foundational to recovering species and creating positive impact on species and #biodiversity. #conservation https://lnkd.in/eAb5CGhb

Kakapos are increasing in numbers!🙌 The Critically Endangered Kakapo is a New Zealand Parrot and the only flightless parrot in the world! Despite its inability to fly, it’s an agile climber and jogs in the under bush.🌿 The Kakapo’s lek-mating system is also different to most other parrots, which mate in pairs. They dig out a bowl at night to amplify their booming calls, attracting females who then congregate at the site to mate. 🔊 To protect it from introduced ground predators, such as rats, the Kakapo was moved by conservationists to predator-free islands to be monitored and to establish a program of captive breeding. We’re proud to announce that Dublin Zoo and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen conservation efforts for Ireland’s native wildlife. Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, joined senior Dublin Zoo and NPWS representatives at the IUCN SSC Centre for Species Survival at Dublin Zoo today to show support for both organisations as they usher in this new era of collaboration in biodiversity protection.    This new partnership marks a major step in biodiversity protection, combining expertise in species conservation, habitat protection, and public engagement to support native species like the White-Clawed Crayfish and beyond. Some great news, after a 100-year absence the endangered Polynesian storm-petrel has returned to Kamaka Island, French Polynesia. The success is thanks to a restoration project by Société d’Ornithologie de Polynésie, funded by the Best 2.0+ Programme, an IUCN-led initiative funded by the EU. The project employed an innovative method involving the application of “rodenticide” pesticides via drones, a pioneering endeavour in French Polynesia. By removing rats, the project contributed to the conservation of rare seabird species, such as the Polynesian Storm-petrel (Nesofregetta fuliginosa) and many other indigenous species of the island. 🐟The Danube has gained 1,000+ new swimmers. In a quiet but significant conservation effort, Russian and stellate #sturgeon juveniles have been released into the river—helping to bring back some of the world's oldest surviving species. This release, part of the #LIFEBoat4Sturgeons project, took place in 📍Port Gruia, #Romania, aiming to help restore sturgeon populations in the Lower Danube and Black Sea basin. These prehistoric fish, which have swum our waters since the time of the dinosaurs, are now among the most critically endangered species on Earth. Beyond restocking, #WWF is working to tackle the root causes of sturgeon decline—illegal fishing, bycatch, and habitat loss.
