Alpenzoo und die Weltnaturschutzorganisation (IUCN) gründen Artenschutzzentrum zur Unterstützung bedrohter Wildtiere Große Ehre für den Alpenzoo. In Zusammenarbeit mit der IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), ehemals bezeichnet als Weltnaturschutzunion, gründet der Alpenzoo ein neues Artenschutzzentrum (Centre for Species Survival, kurz CSS). Der Alpenzoo ist erst die 19. Naturschutzorganisation weltweit, die ein solches Zentrum eingerichtet hat. Diese Zentren werden von führenden zoologischen, botanischen und aquaristischen Naturschutzorganisationen betrieben, die sich aktiv auf wichtige Arten oder bestimmte geografische Regionen konzentrieren. Der Alpenzoo wird dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf den Schutz von Kleinsäugern, also z.B. Hörnchen oder Mäuse setzen. Fünf der neunzehn von der IUCN weltweit anerkannten Zentren befinden sich aktuell in Europa. In vielen Hauptstädten der Welt existieren noch keine solche Zentren, und der Alpenzoo ist nun besonders stolz darauf, die Einrichtung eines solchen Zentrums in Innsbruck bekannt geben zu können. Das Zentrum ist nicht nur eine Ehre und eine Auszeichnung für den Alpenzoo, sondern wird auch das Engagement für die Erhaltung von Kleinsäugetierarten erheblich steigern. Im Rahmen dieser Zusammenarbeit wird der Alpenzoo mit der IUCN SSC Small Mammal Specialist Group (SMSG) zusammenarbeiten, um das Ausrottungsrisiko innerhalb dieser Tiergruppe zu bewerten und die Planung und Umsetzung von Schutzmaßnahmen zu beschleunigen. Die SMSG repräsentiert ein globales Netzwerk von Wissenschaftern und Naturschützern, die ihre Leidenschaft für die oft übersehenen und wenig erforschten Nagetiere, Spitzmäuse, Maulwürfe, Schlitzrüssler, Igel und Baumspitzmäuse teilen.

🌍🐾 Big news for conservation! Alpenzoo Innsbruck has joined the global network of Centres for Species Survival, becoming the 19th organisation to collaborate with the IUCN Species Survival Commission. Teaming up with the IUCN SSC Small Mammal Specialist Group (SMSG), the new Centre will focus on small mammal taxa, driving conservation efforts and supporting scientific research. “We are excited to have Alpenzoo join the global network of Center for Species Survival partnerships which now spans 13 countries and 6 continents. Together these leading conservation institutions have hired almost 50 highly-qualified staff working in support of priority species conservation science and action. Through joint efforts like these we can secure a thriving future for the species we share this planet with,” said Dr Kira Mileham, IUCN SSC Strategic Partnership Director.
