It’s World Architecture Day! RS&H was founded as a collaborative design firm integrating the architecture, engineering, and consulting needs of our clients into what our National Design Director Philip Robbie refers to as “the business of design.” As we celebrate the 2024 World Architecture Day theme of empowering the next generation, RS&H supports its emerging professionals by offering a Design Academy that delves into 16 different aspects of design unique to RS&H. The Academy’s 16 sessions tackled topics that included the benefits of data driven design, incorporating powerful design tools in a modern studio, a candid discussion about sustainability and resiliency, and how professionals can navigate and own a business space by incorporating all of the collective skills introduced through the sessions. Through each class, emerging professionals were able to engage with some of RS&H’s subject matter experts and the multi-generational interconnection that emerged was compelling. “In the business world, sometimes you only have two or three seconds of silence,” Robbie explains, “That two or three seconds is the only window you get for a major statement. You have to exhibit the courage to find your voice.” At RS&H, we recognize that our people are our greatest asset, and investing in our emerging professionals not only benefits our firm but also makes an impact on the profession and our society at large. Simply put, Robbie said, “The world needs more architects that make a fuss.” Scroll through to learn more about the Design Academy from three recent graduates Laura Martin, Kimberly Nogueira, Bradley Foster, AIA, NCARB. #emergingprofessionals #wearersandh #caringculture #worldarchitectureday #designacademy

The U.S. Department of Energy has a new, advanced collaborative research building at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As part of an integrated design-build team, RS&H was the prime architect providing architecture, interior design, laboratory programming, planning and design, and structural engineering services for the 96,000-square-foot Translational Research Capability Laboratory. Research conducted inside the freshly conceived facility will focus on quantum computing, energy storage, autonomous vehicles, lasers, material science, and more. The building is aligned with the sophisticated sciences it houses and is designed for research evolution and future adaptability. Its new concept breaks from traditional linear lab facility models by being composed of blocks of large, modular, open lab areas flanked by smaller sub-function laboratories. Research offices and open workstations, conference rooms, collaboration areas, and amenities for researchers support the laboratories. Construction was completed this summer, and the building will help advance our nation’s most groundbreaking multi-disciplinary research into the world’s energy challenges. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has reached substantial completion on region 2 bridge bundle project! The RS&H Colorado Construction Management team provided design review and construction management services on this design-build project that replaced 17 structurally deficient rural bridges across key highway corridors in southern and western Colorado. The bridge bundle project replaced three structures on CO 9 between Cañon City and Alma, five structures on US 24 between Florissant and Antero Junction, and nine structures on US 350 between La Junta and Trinidad. These structures were replaced with 15 large culvert crossings and two bridges designed to last 100 years and improve safety for motorists. The design-build approach enabled innovations such as the use of aluminum arches and slip lining of box culverts. This method allowed the culverts to be reinforced without major traffic disruptions, avoiding the need for detours, temporary tracks (shoe flies), or excavation. Additionally, aluminum box culverts were utilized, resulting in significant time and cost savings. Although the project was spread over several hundred miles, the RS&H CM team was able to successfully coordinate with all project staff and provide concise design reviews, speedy contractual obligations, and a dedicated inspection staff who were able to cover multiple structures simultaneously. The project was completed five months ahead of schedule and $2M under budget, allowing CDOT to return funds back to the Colorado Bridge and Tunnel Enterprise. These updated structures will improve rural mobility and increase the movement of agricultural products and suppliers and allow for the movement of military goods and equipment. A huge thank you to the Region 2 CM team and their hard work delivering this successful project!
