There is nothing better than giving out big checks and this year we hosted our EPIC (Energy Program for Innovation Clusters) pitch event at the 40,000 strong RE+ convention in Anaheim, CA. At the DOE Office of Technology Transitions we support 80 incubators/accelerators across the nation who were given the opportunity to nominate startups within their ecosystem to pitch at RE+. The winners were: 1st place ($50k) - Safire Technology Group, Inc. with a patented lithium-ion battery safety technology that prevents explosions and the nominating incubator Spark Innovation Center at the UT Research Park received $25k 2nd place ($20K) - Helix Earth Technologies with a solid state high efficiency filtration method that reduces energy use in air conditioners by 50% and they are incubated by Greentown Labs 3rd place ($10k) - AtmosZero with a drop-in steam generating heat pump to replace fossil fuel-fired boilers and they are incubated by Colorado State University I also reminded the crowd that winning is not everything and one person who knows that better than anyone is Jennifer Hudson. She is the17th person to achieve EGOT status but she did not make it very far in American Idol - only placed 7th - but she is now a household name. So, although big checks are great, the key is the journey and not getting defined by if you win or lose! So congratulations to all the startups that pitched. I'm sure they will all do "EPIC" things.. :-) #technology #startups #innovation #energy https://lnkd.in/ewKvYMbT
