The Bronx Summer Cleanup Series results are in! Over the course of 5 cleanups, 442 volunteers worked together to fill 601 bags containing over 6,140 lbs. of litter! This work brought together residents from throughout the city and strengthened ties within our communities – all while making a visible impact on the cleanliness of neighborhoods throughout the Bronx. A big thank you to all of our supporters, partners and volunteers who did their part to keep NYC’s sidewalks, streets, and tree beds clean: New York Yankees, Amazon, polandsprings, NYC Service and Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson.

This week’s #WastePioneer unquestionably lives up to the name. Co-Founder of play:groundNYC Yoni Kallai is on a mission to transform childhood development, and the essential concept of “play.” One way he’s doing this is by having kids play with New York City’s leftover junk. Ten years ago, Yoni heard about the concept of a playground made of construction debris and other trash materials. It’s not a dumping ground, though—this cluster of discarded items from the waste stream were selected especially for children’s play. It’s called an “adventure playground.” And it turned out, New York had an adventure on Governors Island—he joined forces with its founders to help build what is now known as The Yard. Yoni knew the City had a surplus of excess materials that were otherwise going to landfill. So he started helping collect old things meant for waste for use at play:groundNYC. Today, play:ground NYC receives its leftover materials from New York’s network of reuse partners including NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), Big Reuse, as well as Remix Market. It’s completely sustainable sourcing for a playground—nothing new is needed, and old things are given a second life. Learn more about Yoni and the impact his efforts have made to not only reduce waste in NYC, but also allow kids to have fun while doing so. Get the fully story on our blog! https://lnkd.in/ebpF2J-R

Who keeps NYC clean? We all do! It’s time for New Yorkers to learn who’s supposed to clean up what, and where, and when, and why. To help, we’ve published our official NYC Trash FAQ hub, designed to answer unclear, unknown, outstanding (or, we hate to say it, sometimes just ignored!) questions about sanitation in New York City. Check it out on our website → https://lnkd.in/e8xuuBmR To make learning (and re-learning) these rules FUN, we’re launching a new series called Clean City Q&A over on our Instagram. Let’s get everyone talking about waste disposal, recycling, composting or keeping our streets clean — follow along! https://lnkd.in/exAnib4J Do you have specific pressing questions about waste in NYC? Leave them in the comments below, and we’ll add them to the queue!
