Children's rights are human rights. 100 years ago in 1924, world leaders endorsed the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, drafted by Save the Children's founder Eglantyne Jebb. She was the first person to boldly declare that children are people, not the possessions of adults, and therefore deserve to have their own fundamental rights. But, despite progress over the past 100 years, today, children’s rights are being eroded and neglected. At Save the Children, standing up for children’s rights is our past, present and future. And we won't stop until every child's rights are respected, supported and protected worldwide.

We give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm in the US & around the world
About us
Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Recognized for our commitment to accountability, innovation and collaboration, our work takes us into the heart of communities, where we help children and families help themselves. We work with other organizations, governments, non-profits and a variety of local partners while maintaining our own independence without political agenda or religious orientation. When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day — poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease — and replaces them with hope for the future.

Over a century ago, our founder Eglantyne Jebb declared, “Humanity owes the child the best it has to give.” This belief continues to fuel our commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or sex characteristics, enjoys their universal human rights and dignity. That's why we're excited to share that Save the Children is a proud co-founder of the newly formed LGBTQI+ Inclusive Development Community of Practice. This initiative unites development practitioners and organizations to advance inclusive development outcomes 🌈✊ Together, we hope to— 👉 Convene Discussions: Tackle ongoing trends and challenges in LGBTQI+ inclusive development. 👉 Set Standards: Create voluntary minimum standards for programmatic and organizational interventions. 👉 Collaborate and Share: Develop mechanisms to capture and share best practices and knowledge products. As an elementary school student, 14-year-old America used to struggle with reading. But Grandma Heard helped to change that. Through the Mississippi River Delta Foster Grandparent program AmeriCorps seniors are paired with young readers like America who are enrolled in Save the Children literacy programs. Together, they read, play games, and build essential literacy and life skills. With Grandma Heard's support, America's love for reading grew. "After reading a good book, I feel like I can change the world."

This #InternationalLiteracyDay, let’s rewrite the story for kids everywhere. Too many children across the U.S. and around the world miss out on critical learning opportunities due to unequal access to resources. But thanks to your incredible support, we’ve been able to bridge these gaps. This summer, Save the Children provided kids with the books, educational tools, and meals they needed to head back to school ready to achieve their goals. Together, we’re making a lasting impact and helping to #MakeSummerFair—giving children everywhere the strong foundation they need to thrive. ✨
