Non-profit aquarium committed to Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment

About us

The Seattle Aquarium is a nonprofit Aquarium committed to Earth’s one ocean. Our mission, Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, is reflected in everything we do, including our staff’s outstanding animal care work, our public programs centered on conservation education, research activities, policy and advocacy work, and more. We’re proud to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Located on Seattle’s historic central waterfront, the Seattle Aquarium is made up of three buildings: Piers 59 and 60 and the Ocean Pavilion, our newest expansion that opened in 2024 with a focus on the Coral Triangle—a region of the Indo-Pacific that’s rich in biodiversity. Together, our campus tells a powerful story about Earth’s connected waters and how, together, we can protect our marine environment from our beloved Salish Sea to across the Pacific in the Coral Triangle. We are the ninth largest aquarium in the U.S. by attendance and among the top five paid visitor attractions in the Puget Sound region. Since our opening, we’ve hosted over 27 million visitors and provided marine conservation education to over two million school children.

  • Today’s the day! The eagle rays are gliding, the mangrove trees are towering, the clownfish are nestling into anemones—and the Seattle Aquarium's Ocean Pavilion expansion is now open. 🐠 At the Ocean Pavilion, you'll come face to face with 3,500 animals and plants, including rays, sharks, schooling fish, mangroves, nearly 30 species of coral and more. The Ocean Pavilion will also use state-of-the-art, 360-degree, digital displays to tell a story about Earth's one ocean. All waters are connected—from our beloved Salish Sea to the Coral Triangle across the Pacific. At the Ocean Pavilion, we’ll explore how our fate and the ocean’s are connected and how, together, we can make a difference for the ocean we all depend on. This expansion of our campus and our mission has been over a decade in the making, and we can't wait to see everyone experience it for the first time. • We're proud signatories of the WAZA Members' Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation declaration—and looking forward to celebrating Reverse the Red day next week! ✍ Read the declaration:

Last year, in support of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, WAZA presented the WAZA Members' Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation along with Reverse the Red at the CBD COP16 in Colombia, reaffirming our community's commitment to strengthening the role of zoos and aquariums in global biodiversity conservation. Over 100 members from our global community have signed the declaration, demonstrating a collective commitment to conservation while setting a clear path forward for increased impact. WAZA member institutions are uniquely positioned to deliver measurable conservation outcomes and inspire public engagement. We look forward to celebrating their commitment and showcasing strategic actions for species recovery this #ReverseTheRedDay on 7 February. Join us as we share impactful success stories and species pledges! Read the declaration ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/dqUyWbwu

With teacher supervision, students will create a submission related to the need to conserve and protect coral reefs. Classes will submit as one entry, and submissions can inspire through words, pictures, sounds and more. Creativity is encouraged! (See last year's winners below.) Winners will receive a special VIP experience at the Seattle Aquarium and more! Registration for the contest closes February 7. • This past Monday, the Biden-Harris administration protected more than 625 acres along the United States' coastline to ensure these waters will not be offered to the oil and gas industry for future offshore drilling lease sales. 🌎 The adverse effects of oil and gas drilling have had devastating impacts on our environment, coastal communities and vital marine ecosystems. These waters are essential to endangered orcas, fish and migratory bird populations—and we applaud The White House's action to help protect the millions of people and all the marine life that depend on our shared ocean. #ProtectOurCoast

  • The southern resident orcas need help—from all of us—to give their population a real chance at recovery. Take 30 seconds to learn how you can help. 👇 This population feeds mainly on Chinook salmon, using echolocation to find food and communicate. Back in 2023, the Aquarium worked with partners on a bill to help southern residents forage more successfully and feed their young. And as of January 1, 2025, these updated regulations are in effect. Boaters must now stay 1,000 yards from southern residents at all times to minimize noise and disturbance. Not sure if an orca is a southern resident or not? Err on the side of caution and keep your distance. But even with these regulations, the southern residents will continue needing our help. Here are a few ways you can start: • Contact your elected officials and advocate for more investment in salmon habitat restoration projects. • Use nontoxic and environmentally friendly household and yard products. Need to wash your car? Do it at a car wash facility, not in your driveway. • Choose sustainably caught and harvested seafood. Seafood Watch is a great way to get started.
