Meet Raven Simmons, Kalamazoo native, current Detroit resident, and participant in our Year-Round Youth Program. Raven was accepted into the Detroit Carpenters Apprenticeship Program. Raven was accepted in the “Women’s Pre-Apprenticeship Summer Class” which started in July. This opportunity was provided through the “Detroit Carpenter & Millwright Training Center” and her instructor was Ms. Rose Swartz. Participated further solidified her desire to pursue a career in the Skilled Trades Industry, more specifically Carpentry, while attending the “Pre- Apprenticeship Program.” Raven felt as though she could pursue a career pathway that provided her with purpose and would allow her to become successful. As a result of her involvement in the “Women’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program” Raven was accepted into the Detroit Carpenters Apprenticeship Program. When asked about the impact that the Year-Round Youth Program has had on her Raven replied, “the program saved my life and redirected my focus. It did not matter how different my journey was and that the program showed me that I could be successful and go on to achieve improved things.” Keep up the great work, Raven! #AEFLWeek2024

Did you know that AmeriCorps is on the chopping block in its 30th anniversary year? On July 24th, Voices for National Service, America’s Service Commissions, Service Year Alliance, and The Corps Network are cohosting #Stand4Service Today, a virtual day of action. Join us! Congress is debating FY25 appropriations bills and catastrophic cuts to AmeriCorps have been proposed. The House has recommended eliminating funding for AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps NCCC, the State Service Commissions, and the National Service Trust, threatening over 71,000 AmeriCorps service positions. On July 24th, you can use our tools to contact your members of Congress and tell them to reject proposed cuts and support an increased investment for #NationalService. Find out how to participate at: https://lnkd.in/ef4CyXXS #AmeriCorpsWorks
