Light. Hope. Opportunity.
About us
Solar Sister envisions a brighter world powered by women. In sub-Saharan Africa, where over 600 million people have no access to electricity and over 700 million rely on harmful cooking fuels, it’s women who bear the huge burden of this energy poverty and who disproportionately shoulder the harmful effects of climate change. Solar Sister believes women are a key part of the solution to the clean energy challenge. This is why we invest in women's enterprises in off-grid communities. We combine the breakthrough potential of solar and clean cooking technology with a deliberately woman-centered direct sales network to bring light, hope and opportunity to even the most remote communities in rural Africa.

Solar Sister is working to #accelerateaction by training women to become confident businesswomen. We do this by meeting women where they are and training and supporting them throughout the process. Meet Moshi Mohammed (pictured) an entrepreneur in Tanzania. "Women are the people for this work because the community benefits as soon as a woman gets money. If the man gets money, he sends it to his girlfriend. Women are trustworthy. Even if the money is small, the community benefits if a woman has it.” https://lnkd.in/gejddct3 #energyaccess, #climateaction #genderequity

At 65, Ngwaka Mabel never imagined she would become a thriving energy entrepreneur. Like other pensioners, she is a retired teacher who once depended on an irregular pension, uncertain when the next payment would come. But everything changed when, in 2021, a Solar Sister representative visited her community and introduced her to the business of clean energy. "Whether the government pays or not, I make my sales and keep moving,” she proudly says. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQpqvSiw #genderequity #energyaccess #climateaction

Supporting Solar Sister is a tried and true way to empower women year-round, bring light to their communities, and lift lives. Off-grid solar changes lives and energizes local economies. It means a family goes from having no electricity to having light for children to study, power to charge a phone, and a fan to cool their homes. Entrepreneurs can extend their working day, attract more people to their businesses, or connect to new customers. Neema Ally is a farmer in Songwe, Tanzania, a region bordering Zambia and Malawi in the country’s south. The northern and western arms of the Great Rift Valley extend southward here, reaching north of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi). This landscape shapes Songwe’s tropical climate and fertile lands, making it an agricultural hub. For most of her life, Neema worked as a laborer on other people’s farms, always dreaming of one day working her own land. That dream started to take shape when she learned about Solar Sister and saw an opportunity to grow her business and increase her income. https://lnkd.in/g2mp_KaU #genderequity #energyaccess #climateaction
