Light. Hope. Opportunity.
About us
Solar Sister envisions a brighter world powered by women. In sub-Saharan Africa, where over 600 million people have no access to electricity and over 700 million rely on harmful cooking fuels, it’s women who bear the huge burden of this energy poverty and who disproportionately shoulder the harmful effects of climate change. Solar Sister believes women are a key part of the solution to the clean energy challenge. This is why we invest in women's enterprises in off-grid communities. We combine the breakthrough potential of solar and clean cooking technology with a deliberately woman-centered direct sales network to bring light, hope and opportunity to even the most remote communities in rural Africa.

The UKNIAF #STEM Market was a success. It was inspiring to watch the curiosity and enthusiasm of young, intelligent female professionals exploring opportunities in the energy sector. I listened to their fears and concerns, provided thoughtful responses, and encouraged them to be bold in pursuing the heights they aspire to reach. These engagements are crucial—we need to handhold, guide, and support young women interested in the energy space. Speaking with the mentees also highlighted the urgent need to address gaps in the STEM, climate, and energy curricula within our educational system. Solar Sister ,Kristin T. "We need to be holistic when we are talking about SDG7. If we do not have clean cooking in an initiative, it is a gender-blind initiative. Clean cooking saves lives." Sheila Oparaocha, #Mission300, Africa Energy Summit Her words resonate deeply. Clean cooking is not just about energy; it’s about health, gender equality, and dignity. Today, in Dar es Salaam, policymakers, private sector leaders, and advocates came together at the #Mission300 Africa Energy Summit to discuss one of the most pressing challenges of our time—ensuring access to sustainable energy for all. A standout topic today was clean cooking, a critical yet often overlooked pillar of achieving SDG7: Affordable and Clean Energy for All. Sheila Oparaocha reminded us why this must remain front and center: "We need to be holistic when we are talking about SDG7. If we do not have clean cooking in an initiative, it is a gender blind initiative. Clean cooking saves lives." Her words resonate deeply. Clean cooking is not just about energy; it’s about health, gender equality, and dignity. It saves lives by reducing indoor air pollution, empowers women, and protects our planet by cutting harmful emissions. 🌍 Day 1 Takeaway: To truly unlock Africa’s energy potential, clean cooking must be part of every conversation, every initiative, and every solution. Looking forward to more inspiring discussions and actionable solutions as the summit continues! "Energy poverty is a gender issue, but more importantly, energy prosperity is also a gender issue." Olasimbo Sojinrin. Solar Sister is a network of women entrepreneurs aimed at eradicating energy poverty. Let us work to address the gender gaps in energy transition and to close these gaps.
🌍Blog Live “Post-2030 Vision: Prioritizing Gender Indicators for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition” ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, in collaboration with UN Women and co-convenors of the Gender and Energy Compact members (GWNET: Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition, UNIDO, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)), has published an opinion piece on the need to prioritize gender indicators in the global energy transition. With only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline for the #SDGs, progress has been too slow, especially on gender equality. At present, #SDG7 on sustainable energy is one of only six SDGs that lack a specific gender indicator, even though the two are closely interlinked. We can correct this gap in the post-2030 energy framework. This calls for: ✅ Making women more visible in sustainable energy. ✅ Expanding the gender lens on energy data collection. The piece urges SDG 7 data custodian UN agencies to take the lead in exploring the inclusion of stronger gender data points in tracking SDG 7. 🔗 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/edybmZzH Let’s join forces to ensure a just and inclusive energy transition for everyone! 💡💪 #GenderEquality #SustainableEnergy #SDGs #EnergyTransition #GenderAndEnergy #InclusiveDevelopment

It's always a treat to revisit the past year's photographs—the people, places, and stories we've shared. Picking my top 10 favorite images is no easy task! When choosing, I consider the quality of the photograph, including its composition, light, and the moment in time it captures. But it's not just about light and composition. Often, it's about what the photo represents. Some of my favorites highlight resilience—like when an entrepreneur overcomes a challenge or celebrates newfound skills. Others show laughter, connection, or joy shared between people. These moments remind me why we do this work. Please take a look at my gallery of top 10 favorites. Each one tells a story worth sharing. https://lnkd.in/gXhqiPHu Ok, it is really eleven pictures! ☺️
