Light. Hope. Opportunity.
About us
Solar Sister envisions a brighter world powered by women. In sub-Saharan Africa, where over 600 million people have no access to electricity and over 700 million rely on harmful cooking fuels, it’s women who bear the huge burden of this energy poverty and who disproportionately shoulder the harmful effects of climate change. Solar Sister believes women are a key part of the solution to the clean energy challenge. This is why we invest in women's enterprises in off-grid communities. We combine the breakthrough potential of solar and clean cooking technology with a deliberately woman-centered direct sales network to bring light, hope and opportunity to even the most remote communities in rural Africa.

Still in the #IWD month and I recently read a story about a woman who had to choose between her career and her newborn. Her workplace didn’t have a formal maternity policy, so bringing her baby to work was out of the question. So, she resigned. Then there are organizations—usually led by women— Solar Sister is one, where this isn't even a debate, where a baby nestled in its mother’s arms during a meeting doesn’t raise an eyebrow. Where nursing a child isn’t something to hide or feel guilty about. These workplaces don’t just accommodate motherhood; they embrace it. They recognize that women don’t stop being professionals when they become mothers, and mothers don’t stop being mothers when they step into the office. They have perfected the structure in closing the gaps other organizations see when a woman is having her baby and the period she is going to nurse. Women-led organizations that create these spaces are more than just forward-thinking—they are a gift to society. They are shaping a world where women don’t have to choose between nurturing a life and building a career. To those leaders- Olasimbo Sojinrin making it easier for women to do both: you are changing the world in ways you may not even realize. Thank you and Happy International Women's Day to you. #IWD #communicationfordevelopment #womenledorganizations #accelerateaction #C4D

We've been fortunate at Solar Sister to have some exceptional Constellation Fellows as part of the Global Warming Mitigation Project with us as an internship. Hana Paskova, an Economics and Sustainability student from Minerva University, worked as a Data & Systems Fellow in the fall of 2024. In that capacity, she worked on several projects that helped further her understanding of the role of data collection for nonprofit organizations. Read about her experience and what she discovered! https://lnkd.in/g5mmQtKA @GlobalWarmingMitigationProject #climateaction

Several civil societies and stakeholders attended the environmental road march that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Taraba state in partnership ICCREA organized to raise awareness on the state's environmental problems and climate change. Our ever-prepared group of Solar Sister entrepreneurs joined the march. In the past two years, solar sister entrepreneurs in Taraba state have distributed over 23000 units of clean energy products to different communities. These products have replaced kerosene lamps, help increase economic activities and reduce CO2 emisions in the atmosphere. As you can see, our women are trained in fundamental business skills and climate change and they don't hesitate to take advantage of any chances to market their goods and earn more profit. I smiled broadly when I heard one say, "I sell environmentally friendly products." At Solar Sister we are making our environment better, one woman at a time. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #SolarSister

"African women are increasingly powering the green economy and are rising as solar technicians, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. As renewable energy grows, targeted training and shifting workforce trends drive greater inclusion...Solar Sister, a grassroots network training women to sell solar products in Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda, is a great example of these startups." https://lnkd.in/eKFWRiHW

Attending the 2025 Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Global Forum in Bridgetown, Barbados, was an engaging and I nspiring experience, I alongside Solar Sister’s Kenya Country Director, Finorah Manyala, had the privilege of participating in this pivotal event. We were deeply moved by the powerful addresses from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and SEforALL CEO #DamilolaOgunbiyi. Engaging in the "Empowering Women in Leadership" session with #SheilaOparaocha from our partners ENERGIA and Bola Adesola, Chairman of Ecobank Nigeria, provided invaluable insights into advancing gender equality in the energy sector. Connecting with passionate leaders like Jacqueline Novogratz and #SarahBieber from Acumen and #RevJennyPhillips from the United Methodist Committee on Relief, a longstanding supporter of Solar Sister's mission, reinforced our commitment to empowering women and achieving sustainable energy solutions. It was also a wonderful opportunity to connect with several other inspiring women and partners at the forum, further strengthening our resolve to drive positive change. #SEforALLForum #WomenInEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #SolarSister
