Helene update - Oct. 15: South Carolina's electric cooperatives have now restored power to all but 830 of the 425,000 members who lost power when Hurricane Helene pummeled the state two weeks ago. That means 99.8% of those who lost power and 99.9% of the entire S.C. cooperative system now have electricity. Helene will go down as one of the deadliest and most destructive storms to ever hit the Palmetto State, but our co-ops' response has been nothing short of astounding. South Carolina's co-ops mustered a workforce of more than 3,400 to restore power to their members. That included line workers from 11 S.C. co-ops that had finished restoration work as well as crews from 24 states. It amounts to one of the largest storm restoration efforts in state history. Four co-ops had to erect "tent cities" just to house the hundreds of extra crews. They worked 16-hour shifts rebuilding and repairing the electric system and slept at night on cots. That work still isn't quite done, as hundreds of meters still remain out. Most, if not all, of those will be back online by the end of this weekend. Our co-ops won't stop working until the very last light is on.

October is National Co-op Month, a time to reflect on the critical role electric cooperatives play, especially in times of crisis. When Hurricane Helene hit, it knocked out power for 1.25 million South Carolinians, including 425,000 electric co-op members. The storm damaged 5,000+ power poles, toppled transmission lines, and left 80+ substations offline. For many, Helene was the most devastating storm in decades. But our 19 member-owned co-ops responded immediately, showcasing the cooperative principle of "Cooperation among Cooperatives." Every S.C. cooperative deployed line crews, with 12 co-ops sending mutual aid: Berkeley Electric, Black River Electric, Coastal Electric, Edisto Electric, Fairfield Electric, Horry Electric, Lynches River Electric, MPD Electric, Palmetto Electric, Santee Electric, Tri-County Electric, and York Electric. Santee Cooper and Duke Energy Corporation also played critical roles in re-energizing co-op substations. Help arrived from 23 states, with crews as far as California, Maine, and Texas joining the effort. Our materials supplier, CEEUS, Inc., delivered 20-30 truckloads of equipment daily—rivaling the response to Hurricane Hugo in 1989. This massive recovery effort underscores the power of co-ops working together to serve their members. During #NationalCoopMonth, we celebrate the dedication and resilience of Central’s 19 co-ops. Together, we rebuild, restore, and stand strong through every storm—and we’ll remain ready and prepared to do it again, whenever our communities need us most. It’s been a week since Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across South Carolina, severely damaging the power grid and knocking almost half of the cooperative system offline. South Carolina's electric cooperatives have worked tirelessly to turn the lights back on. Line crews have navigated dangerous conditions, cleared fallen trees, replaced broken poles, and repaired damaged equipment. Additional line workers from at least 18 states have joined the effort to restore power to co-op consumers, particularly in the hard-hit western half of South Carolina. In times like these, the role of South Carolina’s electric cooperatives is more critical than ever. When devastating storms like Hurricane Helene strike, our cooperatives get to work. As restoration efforts continue, our thoughts are with the families and business owners who have lost so much. We stand with our communities in the Upstate and beyond, and we applaud everything South Carolina's cooperatives are doing to restore power and get our state back to normal. 📌 This is what the future of postal delivery looks like! 🚚⚡ ✉️ United States Postal Service begins rolling out new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) built by Oshkosh Defense right here in Athens, GA! 🌍 Athens is just the starting point, with thousands of these innovative vehicles planned for deployment across the country in the coming years. 🎥 In a recent video produced by the The Associated Press, Patrick E., Executive Manager, Fleet Strategy & Support at USPS, talked about the phased rollout, with just under 100 vehicles being deployed this year, scaling up to thousands next year, and eventually reaching an impressive 20,000 units annually 🚀 These vehicles are replacing a fleet that has served since the 1980s—some of which are over 37 years old! 🛠️ The design of these NGDVs focuses not only on safety but also on practicality. They are engineered to support carriers in every possible way, from maneuverability to improved comfort. They’re designed to thoughtfully improve the experience of USPS workers, as well as reducing air pollution and making EVs more commonplace across the country. 🚐✨ Electric vehicles like these bring a host of benefits to last-mile delivery and commercial operations: 🌿 Lower Emissions ⇒ By replacing aging combustion engine vehicles, these new EVs will significantly reduce carbon emissions. USPS's move towards electrification is a critical step in contributing to cleaner urban air quality and aligning with global sustainability goals. ⚡ Cost Efficiency ⇒ EVs are also known for their lower operating and maintenance costs. With fewer moving parts, they require less maintenance. This is especially important for large-scale logistics operations like USPS. 🔋 Reduced Noise Pollution ⇒ You won't hear that USPS truck coming through your neighborhood anymore. This makes early-morning and late-night deliveries much less disruptive, contributing to a better quality of life for the communities USPS serves. 💡 Improved Urban Mobility: Last-mile delivery is often characterized by frequent stops, heavy traffic, and narrow streets—environments where EVs shine due to their quick acceleration and regenerative braking. This move is a part of USPS's broader $40 billion modernization plan to upgrade operations and electrify 75% of its fleet by 2028. By the end of this initiative, USPS aims to have more than 66,000 EVs in service, including a mix of Oshkosh's NGDVs and Ford E-Transit BEVs! 🌿🔋 I also recently shared an update on another unique vehicle that USPS is using, albeit on a smaller scale. 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/eGA66D8t #electricvehicles #commercialvehicles #lastmiledelivery #batteryelectrictrucks All publicly available information. • It is hard to put into words the gratitude we feel for our electric cooperatives, their linemen and the army of operations men and women that have worked around the clock since #HurricaneHelene struck South Carolina. We know that South Carolina’s electric cooperatives, as well as linemen from as far away as Texas and New Jersey, will work tirelessly to restore power to our members. It will be a while before normalcy returns to our communities, but in the meantime, these hardworking linemen are bringing power and safety! We cannot thank them enough.
