Oil and gas companies in western Canada are guzzling millions of gallons of fresh water for fracking projects while local communities experience drought. In 2022, Stand.earth wrote a report on it but since then things have worsened. Here’s what you need to know. Last year, Big Oil used a recording breaking six billion plus litres of water in fracking operations. Before 2005 the oil and gas industry was not a major water consumer but with the introduction of fracking, this changed. The volume of pressurized water needed to release underground pockets of gas is staggering. Fracking contaminates water beyond the point of usability but instead of treating it, wastewater is pumped into glorified boreholes, without treatment and only a vague hope it won’t contaminate groundwater. At best this ‘solution’ permanently removes water from the water cycle and at worst, could be responsible for poisoning local residents with the toxic chemicals leftover by fracking. Furthermore, every new LNG project threatens to draw out and contaminate more water, with experts estimating up to 35.1 billion litres annually by 2050 if proposed projects progress.  So while corporate greed sucks up record amounts of fresh water, nearby districts like Peace River, AB are experiencing a multi-year drought and agonizing over their water conservation plans Meanwhile, there is no incentive for oil and gas companies to reduce their fresh water consumption. Big polluters are paying fractions of a cent per litre to drain lakes and rivers and endanger local communities. As Sven Biggs explained “companies pay $2.25 per million litres of water which means that the whole oil and gas sector paid somewhere in the region of $13,000 to access fresh water in 2023” This can change if there’s appropriate regulation. We can start by refusing special treatment for oil and gas and charging fracking companies a price for water high enough to encourage the conservation of freshwater, and requiring them to treat the toxic waste water they produce. We can no longer justify renting our most precious resource for a pittance only for it to be polluted to the point of irreversible contamination while everyday people scramble to reduce their water consumption.
