This month we hosted two introductory brush lettering workshops with Bryan Yonki, or Well Done Signs, here in our Seattle studio. Participants learned the basics of brush lettering, exploring two different styles and getting comfortable with essential tools and techniques. See more of Bryan’s work locally at Gallery Axis in their “Times of the Signs” exhibition which celebrates weird world of signage. https://lnkd.in/gspVsAVH Thanks to our friend and neighbor Zach Bolotin at Porchlight Coffee & Records (& Design!) for the lovely photos of the first workshop. And thanks to Bryan for the beautiful sign! . . . #SignPainting #BrushLettering #GraphicDesign #VisualDesign #SignPainters #Typography #Type #SeattleType #TimesoftheSigns

About us
Studio Matthews is a Seattle-based, woman-owned small business, and practice of designers, teachers, and makers. We are known for our award-winning design and elegant solutions, as well as our focus on environmental responsibility. We begin our work by looking beyond the edges of a brief for unseen potential and opportunities to connect. As advocates and partners, we help our clients see what their projects could be. Together, we work to uncover deeper relationships between a project, its context, and those who encounter it. We strive to create work that elicits surprise and delight as often as it helps to connect and engage. Our work takes many forms: Exhibitions, Installations, Wayfinding, Workplace, Branding, Illustration, Donor Recognition and Placemaking, as well as Landmark and other historically sensitive projects. Whatever the goal, we’ve found the work is most effective and powerful when it is fully integrated into the architecture or landscape, to be experienced as part of a complete environment. For that reason, we believe in and enjoy close collaboration with architects, landscape architects, and clients early in the design process, so that our work can successfully reinforce the project vision.

Numbers are more than symbols: they’re stories, guides, and—when designed with imagination—evoke moments of delight. Whether they dance across walls or stand boldly in a crowd, their simplicity speaks volumes, balancing form and function. In our latest article, 'Numbers in Space: From Symbols to Stories,' we examine how designers are using numbers to create artful expressions of space and purpose. We’re excited to show off a new set of interpretive panels on the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion rooftop! This scenic space is free and open to the public, forming part of Overlook Walk which connects Pike Place Market to the Waterfront. From this spot, 360 degree views of Downtown Seattle and Elliott Bay offer an amazing vantage point for interpretation. Several panels describe the Salish Sea and the wildlife of Puget Sound, others explain the freshly installed native plantings and artwork on the rooftop plaza. Looking to the south, the original natural shoreline is overlaid with how it appears today, revealing its dramatic evolution. LMN Architects, Seattle Aquarium, DCL (Design Communications Ltd.) Earlier this year, the city broke ground on the Pioneer Square pedestrian improvements project — one step toward reconnecting Seattleites with the waterfront. As part of the project, we teamed up with landscape architects MIG and Valerie Segrest of Tahoma Peak Solutions, to interpret a variety of native plant technologies. The etched wood kickrails feature native plants and their respective uses in creating tools for hunting and harvesting. We designed permanent installations weaving throughout four buildings in this tech client's 70-acre campus expansion. Rising up through the building's central atrium, dimensional wall #installations depict interlocking systems that can be found in both technology and nature. These 3D compositions were also translated into 2D wall graphics to unify each floor.
