Hillary Jorgensen, the co-executive director of the Colorado Cross Disability Coalition, was awarded with the 2024 Dr. Virgilio Licona Community Health Leadership Award at the beginning of October. Her heart for community is evident in her work to advance health equity and advocate for justice and systems-level changes impacting Coloradans with disabilities. For centuries, Indigenous communities have built diverse and vibrant cultures — safeguarding land, language, spirit, knowledge, and tradition across the generations — even through colonization of the American continent and Hawaiian islands which caused the death of millions, forced assimilation, land theft and invisibility. Representation and acknowledgment matter, and while there are 574 federally recognized Indian Nations across the US, there is a lack of representation of Indigenous people and modern Native excellence across nearly every sector and in media. This is why The Colorado Health Foundation observes Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Learn more about Colorado’s Indigenous history from People of the Sacred: https://lnkd.in/g2KZ4yd6

CrossPurpose is combatting poverty in Denver and surrounding areas through career development. The faith-based, nonprofit recently opened a third campus in Arvada to serve a larger population. CEO Jason Janz says, "A lot of the people in poverty have left Denver and scattered into first ring burbs, so the suburbs are dealing with levels of poverty they haven't before."

“We’re dealing with irresponsible folks who for political reasons want to make a frenzy about immigration in a city that has historically been welcoming of our immigrant population,” said Aurora City Councilmember Alison Coombs.
