Our whirlwind Nordic tour has come to a close for the senior delegation from the University of California, Berkeley. What a fantastic week for strengthening existing relationships and creating new possibilities. Lund University 🇸🇪 was such a fantastic host. Vice-Chancellor Erik Renström and his wonderful colleagues showed us the many strengths of Lund – the world-class MAX IV Laboratory among them. Nordic Center at UC Berkeley is ready to build upon these efforts and further strengthen our collaborations. We will further leverage STINT, The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education as part of our work while seeking new sources to support heightened collaborations. U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal 🇺🇸 🇩🇰 and the U.S. Embassy in the Kingdom of Denmark convened our UC Berkeley leaders with so many wonderful partners and prospective partners including Novo Nordisk Foundation, Rambøll Fonden / Ramboll Foundation, Grundfos Foundation | PDJF, Independent Research Fund Denmark, Copenhagen Business School, Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, and so many others.... including our UC Berkeley alum 🇩🇰 Parliament Minister Marie Bjerre! New Nordic Cuisine forefather, Claus Meyer, hosted our group for a lovely lunch and conversation about how we can work together - particularly as Claus will be working with IKEA's Nordic Food Hall in San Francisco these upcoming years.... and I even got to see my dear friend Jonas Eder-Hansen as part of it all. Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen 🇩🇰 hosted us for a fantastic session to provide a lay of the land and discuss ways to build upon our existing collaborations. I must admit that I feel a bit like I am dreaming that this is what I get to do. I am so proud to get to work closely with these incredible people at UC Berkeley - Kathy Yelick, Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, Rich Lyons, Ashley Spinelli, and all the wonderful people with whom we are engaged. I am deeply convinced that the world will be a better place by further bringing UC Berkeley to the Nordics and the Nordics to UC Berkeley. Onward!!!

How can businesses move beyond profit-first models and embrace a more sustainable future? 🌱✨ We hosted a high-level roundtable with University of California, Berkeley and Rambøll Fonden / Ramboll Foundation at New York Climate Week to explore how businesses can align profitability with purpose in an era of unprecedented global challenges. Nordic countries, including Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, consistently lead global sustainability rankings due to long-standing traditions of stakeholder engagement and long-term business strategies. As US businesses increasingly adopt similar approaches, this roundtable saw a valuable exchange of insights between leaders from both regions. Together, we explored how sustainable capitalism can be achieved by shifting focus from prioritising shareholder value to embracing it, creating a competitive advantage that drives growth and attracts talent. #ClimateWeekNY2024 #Business #Sustainability 

Sustainable capitalism – balancing profitability with purpose ⚖ Wednesday, we co-hosted a roundtable event at New York Climate Week with Ramboll and University of California, Berkeley gathering leaders from global businesses founded in the Nordics and the U.S. to discuss how to best balance profitability with purpose and drive positive social, environmental, and economic growth. At the roundtable, we got to discuss the shift from prioritising shareholder value to embracing stakeholder value, drawing on insights from both Nordic and U.S. businesses. We explored how this shift can best be driven through different business models and organisational structures, making stakeholder value a competitive advantage for attracting customers, talent, and driving successful business growth. For præcis en uge siden kom jeg hjem fra en fantastisk tur til San Francisco i forbindelse med min uddannelse på SELA via CBS Executive. Nu, hvor de mange indtryk og oplevelser begynder at bundfælde sig, sidder jeg tilbage med en stor taknemmelighed. På turen har vi dykket ned i emner som kunderejser, service recovery, virksomhedskultur og haft muligheden for at besøge både Stanford og Berkeley universiteterne samt flere virksomheder - herunder Google, hvor det var spændende at se, hvordan de får gjort innovation til en naturlig del af hverdagen. En af de største takeaways for mig har været en fornyet taknemmelighed for vores lille land og det samfund, vi har bygget op. Robert Strand satte dette i et skarpt perspektiv i forhold til USA og gav mig stof til eftertanke om, hvor meget vi kan værdsætte de værdier og systemer, vi har i Danmark. #taknemmelighed #innovation #kunderejser #service #SELAviaCBS #jyskebank

What a lovely Nordic Center at UC Berkeley Fall Reception last night at the beautiful patio of the Alumni House at University of California, Berkeley! So many great people and good conversations! My favorite story was from our wonderful UC Berkeley student Robert Viray who shared his experiences studying abroad in Copenhagen 🇩🇰 Denmark with the support of a Nordic Center at UC Berkeley grant. Robert learned to ride a 🚲 bicycle in Denmark, and felt the freedom that brought with it where he could ride his bicycle any night he wanted to sit by the canal and look up at the ✨stars. What a beautiful experience Robert shared and he wants his fellow students to have such experiences - as do we at the Nordic Center at UC Berkeley!!! 🇩🇰 Danish companies: Robert Viray will be coming back to Copenhagen after he graduates in May - he’s already got his plane ticket and will be looking for employment opportunities. He represents one of our “Scandinavian+” students who has combined a major here at UC Berkeley (Economics, in his case) with a Scandinavian minor through which he has taken Danish language and Nordic culture classes. Where else are you going to find such great international talent with strong skills and interests in Danish language and culture?!?! (Copenhagen Capacity, let’s build that direct pipeline between University of California, Berkeley and employment opportunities in greater Copenhagen!) Nordic Center at UC Berkeley is structured around two key hubs: the Scandinavian Department, with its 75-year tradition of Nordic studies, and the Center for Responsible Business at Berkeley Haas , which integrates Nordic sustainability leadership into its focus. Institutionally, the Nordic Center is anchored at the Institute for European Studies at UC Berkeley. Together, these hubs and its IES home, leverage their distinct strengths to expand Nordic opportunities for students and faculty while mutually benefiting from shared resources and cross-campus collaboration.
