First-generation college students often encounter obstacles, such as disparities in financial aid and lack of essential resources. In our latest blog, we discuss how federal aid and community initiatives can be used to address these needs and help students thrive. #CollegeHunger #FirstGenerationStudents #MakeCampusesHungerFree https://lnkd.in/gnJc-9_d

Hunger in Ohio 2024, a state-wide study by the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, shows that across Ohio, 3 in 4 households seeking help from our Foodbank network have annual incomes under $25,000. These families are at high risk of food insecurity and could potentially face dangerous trade-offs, like skipping medication to pay for food. This highlights the need to support strong nutrition programs in the #FarmBill and adequate funding in Ohio's biennial state budget.

Sending thanks to Charitable Recycling for their generous donation of drawstring bags! These bags will be perfect for serving clients who are unhoused, making it easier for them to carry the food and hygiene products they receive. We are so grateful for community partners like these who make our work possible. #ThankYou #CommunityPartners #DaytonOhio (No bags were harmed in the making of this film 😁)

The Foodbank Urban Garden team is excited to be teaming up with Gem City Roller Derby to help make their scrimmage on Saturday, August 24th a zero waste event! The garden team will be onsite at the Dayton Convention Center to help sort items from the event into three categories: recyclable, compostable, and landfill. Our goal is to help divert as many materials as possible to be recycled or composted and minimize the amount of material going to the landfill. After the event, all compostable items will be processed in the Foodbank's in-vessel composter where we turn food scraps and organic materials into nutrient-rich compost for our raised garden beds! Interested in seeing the Gem City Roller Derby team in action? More information and tickets are available at the link below: https://lnkd.in/gWPRWgVY

Thank you to Senator Bob Hackett, Representative Bill Dean, Commissioner Matt Joseph, Commissioner Carolyn Rice, Treasurer John Mcmanus McManus, and the Office of Senator Sherrod Brown, for touring our Hydroponic Greenhouse and Urban Garden. #Composting is vital to our work because it transforms food waste into nutrient-rich soil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports sustainable food production. #ReduceFoodWaste #EliminateHunger
