It’s East Coast versus West Coast in more ways than one as the New York Yankees battle it out against the Los Angeles Dodgers for the title of 2024 World Series Champion. It’s a Thornton Tomasetti tradition to make a friendly inter-office wager when the hometown teams of our offices compete in a major sports event. And with die-hard baseball fans in both our New York and Los Angeles offices, the stakes are certainly high. While the Yanks and the Dodgers haven’t played against each other for the Commissioner’s Trophy since 1981, our experts are predicting a long and exciting series. “It’s going to be Yankees in seven games, because the Dodgers don’t have the stamina,” Senior Principal Matthew Kmetz said. “The first two games in Los Angeles will be a split, then the Yanks will take two out of the three games in the Bronx. The Dodgers will eke out a win in game six and the Yanks take it down in seven.” Meanwhile in Los Angeles, fans there are predicting an earlier victory celebration. “I’ve already procured my tickets for game six,” Associate Principal Kelly Koscielny Millar said. “Go Dodgers!” There are many reasons the Dodgers will be victorious, one of which is Shohei Ohtani, one LA staff member said. “In actuality, Dodgers know it's a coin flip, and anyone could win.” The showdown begins tonight at 5:08 p.m. Pacific at Dodger Stadium. Regardless of who you’re rooting for, the competition is sure to be fierce, both on the field and in our offices. Batter up! #WorldSeries #WorldSeries2024

With bigger and taller mass timber buildings on the rise globally, the material is experiencing something of a heyday. In a feature on the latest crop of timber projects, the Financial Times looked at Thornton Tomasetti’s Ascent tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and spoke with Vice President Alejandro Fernandez Alvarez De Buergo about what it means to build tall with mass timber. #masstimber #structuralengineering

From last to first: New York City’s LaGuardia Airport was named the best in the US by Forbes Travel Guide. In a survey of 5,000 hospitality and travel experts, the Queens air hub took top honors in the publication’s first-ever Verified Air Travel Awards. Once derided as the kind of airport found in a third-world country, LaGuardia has racked up numerous honors and awards following an extensive renovation completed in 2022 (https://lnkd.in/eABHgBgm). Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design, façade engineering, construction engineering, blast protection and hostile vehicle mitigation design to HOK / Parsons Brinckerhoff in the USA (now WSP USA) Joint Venture and Skanska /The Walsh Group - Walsh Construction & Archer Western Joint Venture for the 1.35-million-square-foot Terminal B. From schematic design to construction, structural engineers have many opportunities to reduce embodied carbon on building projects. In our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/draZRmr9), Associate Jackson Pitofsky from our Denver office discusses strategies engineers often use, including early collaboration with architects, structural system “optioneering,” and specifying low-carbon materials, which can dramatically cut embodied carbon. You can find our “Here’s How: Embodied Carbon” podcast, hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Podbean and Spotify. #Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #HeresHowClimateAction #HeresHowPodcast

Associate Principal Aditya Bhagath of our Sustainability and Resilience practice has earned one of the industry's top honors for his innovative work in protecting buildings from floods. Adi was recently presented with the 2024 John R. Sheaffer Award for Excellence in Floodproofing by the Association of State Floodplain Managers, Inc. (ASFPM). The award highlights Adi’s contributions to flood resilience, including work on projects like NYU Langone Medical Center’s campus-wide flood mitigation (https://lnkd.in/eESzTbsA) after Hurricane Sandy and the New York Hall of Science (https://lnkd.in/e2iXaYFs) after post-tropical cyclone Ida. With expertise in climate risk assessments, flood resilience strategies, and performance testing for a range of flood barrier types, Adi’s recent projects include the Terminal Warehouse (https://lnkd.in/ePgj52jb) and Columbia University Milstein Family Tennis Center (https://lnkd.in/eGZBUwvC), both in Manhattan, and Citadel’s new global headquarters in Miami, Florida (https://lnkd.in/edE-BEDR). Adi has also volunteered on the ASFPM non-structural floodproofing committee, contributed to FEMA publications, teaches a multi-hazard risk design of structures course at Columbia University and provided feedback on ASCE ballot proposals related to flood resistant design and construction. Congratulations, Adi!

It’s going to get loud at the Barclays Center tonight. For the second year in a row, the New York Liberty will compete in the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) Championship final, this time against the Minnesota Lynx. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design, façade design and construction engineering services to Ellerbe Becket (AECOM) and SHoP Architects for the Brooklyn design-build arena (https://lnkd.in/eDjC85gQ) that the New York Liberty calls home. After a nail-biting defeat last year to the Las Vegas Aces, whom the Liberty bested in the semifinals, the team is back on the court to defend their house and take another shot at the title. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. Eastern. Good luck to all the players, and if you’re lucky enough to be watching in person, GET LIBERTY LOUD! #SEAFOAMSZN #LIGHTITUPNYL

When it comes to sustainability in building design, some projects go above and beyond. Our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/egg9ntJS) looks at what it takes to achieve ambitious goals for embodied carbon reduction. Drawing on her expertise in life cycle assessments and embodied carbon reduction in buildings, Senior Project Consultant Meghan Kalisz of our Sustainability and Resilience team discusses best practices for meeting high embodied carbon targets. Meghan gives an overview of rigorous certification programs, such as Living Building Challenge CORE certification, their impact on a building’s structural system, enclosure and material selection, and what matters most when reducing embodied carbon in a building design project.
