This milestone marks a significant advancement for Tomorrow.io in transforming global weather forecasting, early warning systems, and climate resilience. These sounder-equipped satellites mark the next phase in Tomorrow.io's expanding constellation, aiming to provide unprecedented sub-hourly global atmospheric measurements of temperature, humidity, precipitation, and tropical cyclones—a first for the commercial sector. "With our microwave sounders, we can set a new standard in atmospheric data collection and prediction," said Rei Goffer, Co-Founder, and Chief Strategy Officer of Tomorrow.io, "This technology allows us to capture atmospheric data with exceptional accuracy, especially over oceans and remote areas where traditional observations are scarce.” The launch of these satellites comes at a crucial time in the advancement of AI technology. Tomorrow.io's expanding constellation of weather satellites is creating a critical missing link: high-resolution, global data for training and initializing AI models with real-time observations. This data will not only enhance the accuracy of Tomorrow.io's own models but also has the potential to significantly advance the field of weather prediction and climate modeling. This advancement builds upon Tomorrow.io's groundbreaking Pathfinder radar satellites (https://lnkd.in/gTJDzK9A) which launched in 2023 and have demonstrated performance that matches or exceeds NOAA's NEXRAD benchmark for rainfall measurement. The satellites are now undergoing initial commissioning, with preliminary datasets expected in the coming weeks. Tomorrow.io's sounder technology is derived from NASA’s TROPICS mission, and the company is concurrently set to rebuild NOAA’s digital infrastructure through the Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) program. The company will continue expanding its constellation, advancing its Resilience Platform™ to address the growing challenges posed by extreme weather and climate change.

Exciting news: Tomorrow.io is partnering with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) to modernize weather forecasting and early warning systems in Vanuatu. Located in a cyclone-prone region of the South Pacific, Vanuatu faces increasing threats from climate change, including more severe cyclones, floods, and droughts. One of the things I am proud of the most at our work here at Tomorrow.io: the most accurate GLOBAL precipitation data in real time. Below you can see a pretty cool animation showing Hurricane Helene as captured by our ML trained layer, which combines all sources of public data and our satellites, vs the US MRMS network. With such reliable global synthetic radar picture, you can drive nowcasting, flood forecasts, tropical storms forecasts and more. It is a key ingredient in our Resilience Platform and a global asset for Climate Adaptation.

As storms like Hurricane Helene become more frequent and volatile, traditional weather sources alone aren't enough. The attached animation shows real-time precipitation data from the MRMS network (left) with Tomorrow.io’s Unified Precipitation (UP) product (right) during Hurricane Helene. Notably, UP captures the storm's full extent and lifecycle, including areas beyond radar range. How? Are you and your teams ready for this week's weather? 🌧️ Tomorrow.io's meteorologists have their eyes on notable conditions across the US. Here's this week's snapshot: 🌀 Active Atlantic Basin: Hurricane Isaac is transitioning into an extratropical cyclone over the northern Atlantic. Tropical Storm Joyce is dissipating in the central Atlantic. Tropical Depression Twelve is expected to develop into a tropical storm early this week and potentially escalate to hurricane status by midweek. Another system is showing potential for development in the western Caribbean or central Gulf of Mexico later in the week. 🌧 Remnants of Helene Affect the East: The remnants of Helene are maintaining broad low pressure that continues to disperse scattered showers across much of the Eastern US. While precipitation is generally light, the southern Appalachians, already saturated from previous rainfall, are hopeful for drier conditions later in the week. 🔥 Heat Wave in the West: Despite the arrival of autumn, extreme heat persists in the Desert Southwest and California, with record highs anticipated in the triple digits for central and southern California, southern Nevada, and Arizona. This sweltering heat will extend into Texas and the central Plains towards the end of the week, with highs likely reaching the upper 90s in many major cities across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
