Next year, lawmakers will have the opportunity to advance pro-growth tax policy as they work to avoid the largest tax increase in American history at the end of the year, when many important provisions from the 2017 tax cuts are scheduled to expire. This week I participated in Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit as a panelist for the "Building More Sustainable Cities" session. Together, our panel discussed how collaboration and innovation are key to creating sustainable urban environments.   A highlight for me was the opportunity to spotlight the 2024 Climate Resiliency Report, produced in partnership by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Allstate, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. This collaboration with Allstate showcases the profound economic benefits that come from investing in climate resilience, showing how every dollar invested in disaster preparedness saves $13 in economic costs, damages, and cleanup, a "Preparedness Payoff." These proactive efforts can significantly enhance community sustainability and economic vitality. It was an honor to join other women leaders in discussion: Nancy Mahon from The Estee Lauder Company, Ritu Narayan from Zūm, and Rebecca Tinucci from Uber, under the insightful moderation of Fortune’s Ellie Austin. #FortuneMPW

More than forty members of the U.S. Chamber's Small Business Council—a policy and advocacy steering committee of small business owners—took to Capitol Hill to share their firsthand experiences on how tax policies impact their businesses and communities. With the 2025 tax cliff approaching, they emphasized the importance of maintaining the 20% pass-through deduction, a low corporate tax rate, and robust R&D incentives. Smart tax policy is critical to American businesses, and delivering this message to candidates and members of Congress is a key priority for the Chamber this year. “Hope is not optimism, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for.” — Seamus Heaney Seeing Ireland’s Taoiseach yesterday go from meeting with the President of the United States in the Oval Office celebrating 100 years of U.S. - Irish relations to, moments later, hearing the sirens of the motorcade pull up outside the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, shaking my hand, and sitting across from me—a kid who came from nothing—was a humbling reminder of life’s unexpected journey and the power of perseverance. It’s days like yesterday that show us that no matter where you start, how small your beginnings, or what stage of life you’re at, you can rise to extraordinary heights—just as Simon Harris is leading a nation at 37. So many Irish immigrants risked everything to come to this country for a shot at a better life. Marrying into an Irish family, yesterday reminded me of how my own story of adversity intersects with theirs—how my wife, her family, and the family we’re building together are all part of that 100-year legacy of resilience and hope.
