We’re thrilled to recognize the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) as a 2024 Wastewater Surveillance Champion! In their nomination of LACSD, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) explained that LACSD has been a leading voice in recognizing and communicating the immense impact #wastewater surveillance can have on #publichealth. As one of the first #utilities to join CDPH’s surveillance program in 2020, LACSD has continuously participated in multiple initiatives, including those led by CDPH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and WastewaterSCAN. They even analyzed their own samples early in the COVID-19 pandemic. LACSD’s contributions to wastewater surveillance are exceptional: ☑️ Actively engaging in monthly CDPH office hours, sharing expertise, advocating for utilities, and offering insights that drive improvement for the entire sector. ☑️ Demonstrating leadership at all levels—national, state, and local—through roles in the NWSS Utilities Community of Practice, the California Water Quality Monitoring Council, and polio monitoring efforts. ☑️ Collaborating with CDPH and the LA County Department of Public Health to enhance the public health sector’s use of wastewater data. ☑️ Providing constructive feedback that led to a more user-friendly CDPH metadata platform, improving access for other utilities. ☑️ Promoting community involvement by sharing surveillance results and supporting citizen scientists. ☑️ Generating vital resources and presenting at conferences to advance knowledge and adoption of wastewater surveillance practices. The field has greatly benefited from LACSD’s leadership, dedication, and constant engagement, inspiring others to advance the use of wastewater surveillance for public health protection. #WEFPublicHealth #watercommunity Patricia Hsia, P.E.
