Black History Month gives us an opportunity to reflect and educate. The fractured relationship between the Black community and the American healthcare system is well documented. The barriers to quality health care for Black women are tangible in the inequitable outcomes of breast cancer survival. Despite similar screening and incidence rates, Black women have a significantly higher mortality rate from their breast cancer. #blackhistorymonth #breastcancer

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we decided to have a Pink Pumpkin Painting/Decorating Contest. The only "rule" was that the pumpkin needed to be painted pink, then you could be as creative as you want. First place winner would have a $1,000 donation made in their name to the Ellie Fund. We were extremely lucky to have Executive Director of the Ellie Fund, Meredith Mendelson join us that day. Finished pumpkins were displayed in our 5 & Dine for about a week, voting was done anonymously by number and open to all employees. Most number of votes, determined the winner!! Please enjoy pictures from our fun afternoon and see the winning PINK PUMPKINS!!!

I realize this post is very late, but wanted to share these photos from our Fiesta celebrating Hispanic Heritage month. We listened to music while enjoying delicious food from 4 different restaurants representing cuisines from Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala and Venezuela. While the food was AMAZING!!, the best part of the luncheon was having everyone together. It was simply fantastic seeing faces you hardly see and hearing all the chatter in the cafeteria. It was reminiscent of my own family holiday parties, everyone talking, enjoying the music and each other. There was a sense of community and celebration which made this luncheon a perfect representation of Hispanic Heritage for me.

WCVB Channel 5, in collaboration with Bernie & Phyl's Furniture, came together for a ribbon cutting for a special "5 Fixer Upper" project at Home Base Program National Center for Excellence in Charlestown, MA. Thanks to the generous support of Bernie & Phyl’s Furniture and other community-focused partners of WCVB, Home Base is set to experience a rejuvenated outdoor space. One third of Massachusetts households are considered food insecure. On September 20th, WCVB Channel 5 hosted The Greater Boston Food Bank for the 5th consecutive year for a televised Day of Giving from our studio in Needham. Thanks to our viewers and generous partners of GBFB, we raised over $288,000. The needs of our neighbors are historically high and are urgent. You can still give at www.wcvb.com/gbfb. Thank you for your generosity!

Today we celebrate an incredible milestone for one of our employees. Ike Laughinghouse. His journey began 50 years ago today! "Unflappable", "Never says no", and the "hardest worker in the building", are some of the phrases used to describe Ike as a co-worker. He is kind, full of grace, generous, has an infectious smile and has made this a better place by being here. Everyone who has known or worked with him is better for it. Congratulations on 50 years Ike!!

Even though the Sox lost, our "Docs at the Sox" event on Monday was a blast! Over the course of the last two years, they have provided meaningful and actionable information to NewsCenter 5 viewers – information that has helped them make important physical and mental healthcare decisions during an unprecedented time. We wanted to show how grateful we are for them and what better way than a night out at Fenway Park!
