Kris Ranslem oversees the Planning Commission for the Department of Planning and Zoning and believes public involvement is critical in effective government. She has been organizing the Planning Commission for more than 17 years, ensuring members have up-to-date information, agendas, and meeting minutes. Over the years, Ranslem has seen the benefit the Planning Commission has had on its members and the public. Members of the Planning Commission are Weld County residents who volunteer their time to learn about planning efforts countywide and offer recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners. Members come away with a greater appreciation and understanding of local government. Residents have several opportunities to engage with Weld County Government, and we encourage citizens to actively participate in the governing process. Every year, the Weld County Weed Division team works to prevent, suppress or eliminate noxious weeds along county roads, property and facilities. This is achieved by applying bare ground treatments around county facilities and communication towers to stop growth before it starts and by mowing, spraying, utilizing technology such as drones, and biological processes, such as the use of mites and Gall Wasps. Weed Landowner Specialists can also provide advice to residents on how to control growth on their property. In the last two years, these efforts have resulted in the Weed Division treating more than 2,000 acres of noxious weeds. Last week, Elizabeth Relford, the Interim Director of Planning for Weld County, had the incredible opportunity to join other esteemed municipal leaders at the Colorado Municipal League Conference in Loveland. The conference was a platform for discussing the vital connection between land use and transportation, which are intertwined and must be considered together in the face of Weld County and the Northern Front Range's rapid growth. To ensure a prosperous future for our community, it is crucial that our planning efforts encompass not only the development of land and roads but also foster collaboration with neighboring counties and communities. The Colorado Municipal League, a nonprofit advocacy organization representing the interests of Colorado's cities and towns since 1923, hosted this inspiring event. It brought together over 1,000 officials from various municipalities, administrators, and key staff, all passionate about shaping a brighter future for Colorado.
