In the transformative 1960s, Zachry had projects that took them abroad, underscoring a commitment to innovation and excellence. Kwajalein Atoll - Nike Zeus Testing Facilities (Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands): Zachry's first major overseas project took them 5,500 miles from San Antonio, TX, to the Marshall Islands. Constructing the Nike Zeus testing facilities for $3.2 million showcased Zachry’s international capabilities. Hilton Palacio del Rio: The "Palace of the River" in San Antonio, TX, was innovative and efficiently built with modular construction, methods in which Zachry obtained patents. Zachry completed the 500-room hotel in an astonishing 202 working days, ahead of schedule for the 1968 World’s Fair. Shortly after, Zachry entered the hospitality business by acquiring the hotel and ultimately operating and managing the property. #Zachry100 #BuildingTheExtraordinary #CenturyofExcellence

In the 1950’s, Zachry embarked on projects that shaped the landscape of infrastructure and energy production. Big Inch Pipeline spanning Tennessee and Kentucky: In 1950, Zachry laid 95 miles of pipeline for the Texas Eastern Pipeline Company, marking the beginning of H. B. Zachry Company’s work in pipeline construction. Throughout the next 35 years, Zachry completed 5,248 miles of such pipeline. W.B. Tuttle Steam Power Plant (San Antonio, TX): In 1953, construction began on Unit II of the W.B. Tuttle plant marked Zachry’s first turnkey power plant project, leading to the construction of more than 100 plants that produce more than 60,000 megawatts of electricity. In 1957, Zachry was awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force to rebuild runways at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, TX, and opted for efficiency by incorporating Capitol Aggregates to manage sand, gravel, and ready-mix operations, repurposing an existing lithium plant to meet materials demands for the project. #Zachry100 #BuildingTheExtraordinary #CenturyofExcellence

In the midst of the Great Depression, Zachry's determination and ingenuity led to two significant projects that shaped the company’s future and contributed to our national infrastructure. Despite the challenges, H.B. “Pat” Zachry secured a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for concrete paving work, showcasing our resilience and expertise at the Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Named after H.B. “Pat” Zachry’s father, Col. John H. Zachry Field in Laredo, TX, started as a small installation. Under Zachry’s leadership, the airfield was expanded into a crucial military resource during World War II, known as the Laredo Airfield. #Zachry100 #BuildingTheExtraordinary #CenturyofExcellence

Pat’s personal philosophy defined Zachry for the past 100 years and will continue to drive Zachry’s next 100 years. #Zachry100 #BuildingTheExtraordinary #CenturyofExcellence

Join us on a journey through the decades as we celebrate 100 years of pioneering groundbreaking construction methods. Shortly after graduating from Texas A&M with a Civil Engineering degree, H. B. “Pat” Zachry penned an inspiring philosophy in which he affirmed his personal pursuit “to dream and to build” and founded the H. B. Zachry Company. Throughout the next 10 weeks, we will highlight key projects from each decade built by earlier Zachry companies, and hear from a few of their retirees. #Zachry100 #BuildingTheExtraordinary #CenturyofExcellence
