🚛 🚌 Trucks and buses are like the blood in our veins, transporting essential oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Trucks and buses do the same by keeping society on the go. #Trucks transport around 80% of goods by land, and #buses account for over half of public transport journeys in the EU. Our vehicles are essential to keeping us on the move. That’s why it’s important for Europe to ensure this vital industry is not only sustainable but can also stay competitive globally. 🖋️ Read more from Harald Seidel, CEO of DAF Trucks NV and recently elected Chairperson of the Board of ACEA’s truck and bus manufacturers, in our latest editorial. ➡ https://lnkd.in/d6VJuTN7

This week's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Political change by the busload hree weeks on from the General Election and the Kings Speech followed through on Labour’s manifesto commitments to improve many of the UK’s wider industrial needs that will have a significant positive impact on the automotive sector, from green and affordable energy to improved trade relationships, skills reform, gigafactories and grid infrastructure. The programme had an obvious focus on economic growth so it’s pleasing that growing England’s bus fleet is an early priority within that wider mission. After all, a booming bus sector is so important for local communities and regional economies to thrive too. With bus franchising already well established in London, where the majority of Britain’s zero emission buses have been rolled out, the Better Buses Bill can be a significant enablers for local authorities to deliver their own decarbonisation goals. In addition to improving local air quality, the modern passenger experience that zero emission buses provide can also help increase ridership levels, as studies such as the Welsh Government’s TrawsCymru T1 pilot service have found, https://lnkd.in/eRgUVaGj. All commercial vehicle sectors need equal support, however, if decarbonisation is going to be a success. From vans and minibuses to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and coaches, delivering more public charging infrastructure is the key to accelerating uptake of the very greenest models. While the Plug-in Van Grant must remain in place until we reach a point where infrastructure is no longer a barrier to making the switch, the HGV sector urgently needs a more timely Plug-in Truck Grant that’s fit for a new generation of fleets, this was part of the SMMT paper launched at the CV Show in April https://lnkd.in/eYQbKwyX. The previous government’s plans for a minibus driving licence derogation, meanwhile, which would have qualified standard licence holders to drive zero emission vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes has real potential to boost electric adoption. It’s crucial that this legislation makes the transition to new government in the near future. SMMT looks forward to making the priorities of our commercial vehicle members clear in our representation to the new government, however, another major benefit of membership is the business networking and partnership opportunities we provide. One such instance came last week with SMMT’s Meet the Van Converter, connecting light commercial vehicle manufacturers and van converters in one-to-one meetings. With more than 25 businesses and some 57 meetings, feedback from businesses was outstanding. If you’re not a member and would like to get involved, please get in touch via wreeves@smmt.co.uk.

Electrifying the truck industry in many ways is more straightforward than for LCV fleets, trucks are essentially back to base or long distance operations and therefore will need strategically placed charging hubs However, therein lies the challenge. There is currently no truck charging network and the power required at these locations is pretty significant So it's great to start to see the green shoots of progress Milence is a joint venture between Daimler Truck AG, TRATON GROUP (Scania Group, MAN Truck & Bus SE, Navistar Inc & Volkswagen Truck & Bus) and Volvo Group that is working to build a high-performance charging network for heavy trucks and coaches across Europe (15 countries) At least 1,700 charging points over the next 5 years with a mix of CCS and the new Megawatt Charging System (MCS) with the first location in the Netherlands at Venlo is already up and running with 4 x 400kW CCS chargers This first site in France has also just opened with 4 x 400kW CCS chargers and with MCS charging bays to be introduced by the end of the year A third site will open in Antwerp, Belgium in Q2 2024 with Varberg, Sweden opening in Q3 and a second site in Belgium (Ghent) is in development As well as the charging facilities, Milence will also be providing driver facilities such as toilets, showers, restaurant and even laundry facilities all designed to suit the drivers needs There's an unbelievably long way to go but it's great to see that real progress is being made #ev #evs #electricvehicles #electrictrucks https://lnkd.in/eweNZ2gr

Logistics operators unite to give HGV fleet decarbonisation a JOLT. Electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are to be trialled across the UK in a new programme to help freight operators decarbonise their fleets. Called Project JOLT – standing for Joint Operator Logistics Trial – the programme is led by The Centre for Sustainable Road Freight (SRF) and involves partners including John Lewis Partnership, Volvo Trucks UK, and Flexible Power Systems, a software company specialising in fleet management optimisation software for electric vehicles. The JOLT partners will pool data and learning from their experiences with eHGVs in retail, delivery, and manufacturing operations to help develop transition plans for their own businesses and for the wider logistics industry. SRF says the electrification of the UK’s commercial fleets needs to happen urgently. HGVs account for 20% of CO2 emissions from domestic transport, but are vital for the country in that, for instance, 98% of food and agricultural products are carried by road, mostly on HGVs. Electrifying the UK’s HGV fleet would be the same as removing 13 million cars from our roads. A key problem is ensuring a smooth transition to electrification is a multi-faceted and onerous challenge, but maintains SRF, data driven insights are key to ensuring the confidence for companies involved in logistics to begin or continue their journey towards Net Zero... This week's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, New truck and bus markets begin to normalise Recent years have seen very strong demand in the new HGV market with factories working double time to meet pent-up demand since the pandemic – and thanks to those efforts, the backlog is now beginning to clear up, new SMMT figures published today show. A slight decline of -3.9%, with just over 11,000 new trucks joining UK roads, puts the market just 449 vehicles below a robust quarter one in 2023. The aim is to reach a new normal that’s greener, and demand for zero emission trucks is growing thanks to huge investments by manufacturers to deliver new battery electric models to the UK market, with uptake accelerated by the Zero Emission Road Freight Demonstration Truck Trial. It means uptake of the greenest, cleanest HGVs rose by 56.3% on last year, albeit still representing half a percent of the overall market. While manufacturers are investing, innovating and informing operators of all the benefits of making the switch, currently fewer than half of the models being offered in the UK are eligible for the Plug-in Truck Grant. Given that, at the same time, Britain’s incentive scheme is less attractive than those in other major markets, the emphasis must be on other stakeholders to step up their support for a wider range of operators to go green. Another priority, as SMMT made clear at the CV Show last month, must be to deliver a national infrastructure strategy that’s dedicated to the needs of heavy vehicles. Market stabilisation for the bus, coach and minibus sector means growth, meanwhile, with operator confidence growing thanks to rising passenger numbers, with the new vehicle market up 74.6% in quarter one. Demand for minibuses has more than doubled, up 118.8% to 851 units, with these vehicle playing a really important role across UK communities, from school and rural community services to social care transport. Britain had the largest new zero emission bus market in Europe last year and growth is continuing, up 22.9% – the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) fund having an important role, though it’s worth noting there are also operators making the switch without such support. With the local transport authorities that have won funding in the second ZEBRA round now announced, however, more green registrations can be expected in the coming few years.
