Pedro Pacheco, research vice president at Gartner, said that new OEMs are looking to transform the automotive industry and will simplify production costs through a variety of innovative ways, such as centralized vehicle architectures and large, one-piece die castings, to reduce manufacturing costs and assembly time. As part of a progressive electrification that will also affect medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs), S&P Global forecasts that by 2030, 16% of vehicles produced in Europe, China and North America will be equipped with electric engines. Internal combustion engine (ICE) trucks and commercial vehicles will continue to be produced in all regions of the world, although fuel cell engines will account for 5% and 3% of total production in North America and China respectively. The MAHLE E-Axle is a technology demonstrator showcasing our systems expertise in electrification of heavy-duty vehicles. The fully functional electric axle integrates two MAHLE SCT e-motors with a total peak power of 520 kW and 480 kW continuous power for challenging electrically driven commercial vehicle applications. With the SCT (Superior Continuous Torque) electric motor, MAHLE has the longest-lasting electric motor in its portfolio—a true electric endurance champion. The new e-motor is unrivaled in its small size, light-weight and efficiency. The groundbreaking oil cooling ensures that the traction motor can operate with high output for an unlimited period of time. The oil management of the high-performance motors is optimally integrated into the axle, with maximum efficiency and minimum pressure loss. Both the SCT electric motors and the liquid management module have been developed ready for series production.
