Do you interact frequently with state programs such as rehabilitation tax credits, Section 106 reviews, or local preservation commissions to carry out historic preservation projects? If so, then you are most likely familiar with The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, which provide direction to historic preservation stakeholders and professionals for planning the repairs, alterations, and additions that may be part of a historic rehabilitation project. The goal of the Standards is to support the long-term preservation of a property’s historical significance through the preservation of historic materials and features. The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) wants to hear from YOU! What has your experience been like working with the Standards for Rehabilitation? A new post from ibeckermannotrobot.blog. https://lnkd.in/ezS_GeAt The NPS has put out a revision to Bulletin 38 for comment. This draft greatly expands the guidance offered to nominating historic places that are important to traditional communities, but it is hampered by limits imposed by existing legislation and regulation.  Nominated places must still fulfill all current existing standards for significance and integrity. The authors have also exposed a problem with the entire construct of a traditional cultural place.  The guidance fails to show how it should stand separate from other historic places, resulting in a false dichotomy. The immediate answer is to update 36CFR60 to be more in tune with the intent and ever evolving understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Historical Markers are a nuanced part of the #historyenterprise. Many states started erecting metal markers in the 1930s, sometimes utilizing #NewDeal funding. The catalog of what’s on them has continued to grow in diversity and inclusion. A problem with markers is duration in that ways of expressing #history has changed with #language and the kinds of questions asked of the Past. Revising legacy markers can almost be a full time job! In the meantime, the inventory of markers continues to grow.
